Default Line Spacing – Word 2010

We have just upgraded to Office 2010 from Office 2003.

We are used to having a “normal” template, with all our standard settings, which applies to any new document. I understand that Word 2010 works in rather different ways…

One idiosyncrasy which is irritating my members of staff, is the way Word 2010 seems to default to double line spacing when opening a new document and starting to type.

I know it is just one click on the “no spacing” button to correct this, but is there a way to set “no spacing” as the default? We have tried to find a way, but without any luck so far.

The default spacing for ‘Normal’ style did change, starting with Word 2007: Normal style now defaults to having 10 pts of space after, and line spacing set to Multiple/1.15.
Some people prefer this new setting, as it eliminates the need to type a ‘Return – Return’ between paragraphs.

One way to change the setting, within a given document, would be to click on Change Styles > Style Set > Word 2003.

If you want to make this change the default, you could locate your Normal.dotm template (yes, Word still uses the ‘Normal’ template by default for new documents), open it, and change the Style Set to Word 2003. Save and close Normal.dotm, and from then on all new Blank documents will have the Word 2003-type styles.
