I will be working on a friends netbook this afternoon, and have a couple of questions on WinXP
1: In IE can I set the default “mail” to Windows Live Mail or hotmail using the set default programs? Currently when she clicks on the mail page icon it brings up Outlook Express.
2: Where in XP do I find the default programs settings. Sorry, I forgot!

I would doubt it. Since both of those are web based email clients vs programs {Outlook, OE, Thunderbird} on a local machine. Sorry.

Note: Windows Live Mail is a desktop client.

          Joe,

Thanks for the correction. I thought all the “Live” stuff was web based.

The web base portion of email is “Windows Live Hotmail” or just Hotmail as most people call it. Windows Live is a combination of web services and desktop programs. The desktop programs are called Windows Live Essentials.

One place to go using Win XP Pro SP3 is … open IE>Tools>Internet Options>Programs>E-mail

And of course, you can set up any Hotmail accounts in Live Mail and access them through the desktop client.

Thanks Joe, RG, etal. I don’t see anyway in set programs to set hotmail as the default for the mail icon in IE. I did however find 1 workaround that I think she can handle, and 1 solution.

: Work Around: Right clicked on a web link and then clicked on “E-Mail with Windows Live”. that will bring up your Live Account. I was able to then send through my MSN account.
: Solution: have her get rid of the Google Toolbar and use the Bing Bar. I noticed on there, that the mail icon on the bar it will mail through Windows Live Mail.

      thanks again

Odd, my options are for OE, Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Mail and Opera of all things (never set anything up for/with Opera) to be set as the default program. Also, if its in the BING bar, which intergrates with IE right(?), I don’t see how it couldn’t be an option in the Internet Properties>Programs dialogue but I guess far stranger things have happened.
