Every time I start Chrome it tells me it’s not my default browser, despite having me having previously clicked on ‘Set Default’.
I also noticed that every time I click on a link Internet Explorer opens, not Chrome.
I tried altering the defaults in Default Programs and I can’t untick IE.
I find this annoying, especially now my W10 setups all satisfactorily allow this change.
Anyone advise on Registry settings that might affect this?

There is one thing to try, I’ve done it with good results. Within Control Panel, within Default Programs, within Set Your Default Programs: “go backwards” i.e. I have three browsers, I first pick IE and give it all its defaults, 2nd, I pick Firefox and give it all its defaults, 3rd, I pick Google Chrome and give it all its defaults. That usually gives me what I want. Also, to confirm, in the set file associations section, make sure htm and html have your favorite browser alongside.

I run the same three browsers. I followed your suggestions but no change.
Whatever I try it keeps reverting back to IE.

When you first install Chrome, does it give you the option to make it the default browser as does Firefox and to an extent, IE when you reset it to defaults ?

If it does then I would uninstall and reinstall Chrome to see if it sticks then and check to see if Win 10 then has it as the default browser.

I have no problem in Win 10 (see my OP), it’s started happening in W7 after a long time with no problems.
I’m wary of recent updates by MS causing this.
I’ll try uninstalling etc as you suggest, but I don’t expect this to help with being unable to untick IE in Default Progs.

Perhaps something else to try if reinstalling Chrome doesn’t do it, is to reset IE to defaults then after the reboot to effect, don’t make it the default browser as you are prompted to do.

Didn’t help, still get IE taking over. If I try to remove default actions from IE the tick boxes just refuse to budge.

I suppose you could see if turning it off and on in Programs & Features/Turn Windows features on and off, or see if you can nail Chrome as the default browser while it’s turned off.

How exactly are you trying to set Chrome as the default browser ?

You keep mentioning tick boxes – none are involved in the process.

Are you clicking on Settings/System/Default Apps then scrolling down to Web Browser and clicking on IE which will give you a pop up to select the browser of your choice.

How did IE become to be the default browser as Edge normally occupies that spot until it is changed.

Sudo15 this is the Win 7 forum and I am experiencing the problem in Win 7.
In ‘Set program access and computer defaults’ I have set a custom configuration and unticked access to IE.
I have also made Chrome the app to use for htm and html and url files.
It still won’t stop using IE.

My apologies – I’m more used to people posting with problems in Win 10 these days and forgot you were using Win 7.

Perhaps you need to fix the file associations and then try setting your defaults, but have you ever been able to set Chrome as default ?

As I said in Post #5 I originally had Chrome set as the default. It’s only lately started being reset to IE, which made me suspicious of recent so-called ‘Quality’ updates from MS.
I also tried the suggested reg changes in your link in post #11. Again no improvement.
I noticed that the .htm and .html entries in HotKey_Classes_Root refer to IE and wonder if these could be altered to name Chrome, but my knowledge of registry editing is not up to changes of that nature.

If you believe the problem is down to the recent type of MS updates then I think you can uninstall them to determine if they are the cause.

While this isn’t a fix, you can disable IE by unchecking its box in Program and Features/Turn Windows features on or off.

That may allow you to set Chrome as default and then you have the option of re-enabling IE to see if it sticks with Chrome as your default.

Voila! Today I find Chrome is my default browser, I don’t know why it’s suddenly resolved itself, although there have been some updates to MS Office and .net in the past few days.
