• default.rdp file just showed up in “My Documents”

I noticed late yesterday that a file named “default.rdp” had showed up in my “My Documents” folder.

Web searches indicate that the file is related to Remote Desktop Protocol and comes in on port 3389. Multiple sites recommended changing the port and making the appropriate Windows Firewall changes.

Searching Ask Woody and Woody’s lounge turned up no mention.

I did learn that it apparently showed up because I had left “show hidden files and folders” checked in the View options in File Explorer. That said, I have often had this option checked and have never noticed this file before.

My concern is that I have not attempted any remote connection from this PC and also, that the file now has today’s date so it has updated.

The only change that might relate is that I recently installed 1Password, but I couldn’t find anything related in a search with both arguments.

I’d appreciate any insight anyone may have.

    Thanks

What’s the date of the file? Also what’s the size?  Were you doing something around that time that may have triggered the rdp app?

        Susan,

Thanks for your reply, really appreciate it.

The date of the file is 12.17.20 and it is 0 Kb.

I moved the file to a junk folder and just checked it. It hasn’t updated. It also has not reappeared in “My Documents”.

Sadly, I appear not to have been paying enough attention, as the date and size should have indicated to me that maybe this is a “not to worry”. (My notes for that day indicate that I was mainly shoveling a heavy snow. Don’t know if I may also have somehow triggered a remote connection.)

Malwarebytes and Windows defender detected nothing and a FING scan indicates that my network seems reasonably tight to the outside.

Unless someone suggests otherwise, I will consider this a dead event, but do very appreciate your follow up.

Have you used Remote Desktop Connection at any stage? This normally creates a hidden Default.rdp file in your Documents folder which contains the connection settings used for the last connection used.

Thanks. Don’t believe I did but on reflection the date of the file (12.17.20) and size (0 Kb) makes me think this is a non-issue.
