I believe that improved security is a key reason for the telemetry that Microsoft is doing. These improvements are excellent and will make large corporations want to stay with Windows.

Maybe I’m being too cynical, but I still think this is all snake oil.
      Don’t use Edge? You’re screwed.
Don’t use Defender? You’re also screwed.

EMET is still available (and hasn’t been pulled yet by MS, though I expect within the next year or two, it will be), and installable in 7, 8, and 8.1. It does all the protections they’ve passed on to Defender, without requiring Defender to have them.

Furthermore, I would argue that at least 95% of home users do not use MS browsers, and instead, use 3rd party browsers which have all been touted and proven to be “more secure” (than MS’ offerings). Those home users would probably benefit from these protections the most, but they’re not offered in Win10 Home.

With these new improvements, perhaps it’ll be safe to soon install 1709 in one more month or so.

Meh, I am always a bit skeptical about all this. But at least Microsoft is conscious of working to make Windows 10 secure. I don’t care to be tied down to everything Microsoft to obtain this security though.

Neither of my two Win 10 computers have yet had the Fall Creators dumped onto them. Am I living right, or what?

I am always happy to see Microsoft taking OS hardening seriously. 🙂

In the article they state that: “If you are a current Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) user, you will be happy to know that features that are available within EMET have been migrated to Windows Defender Exploit Guard (WDEG) Exploit Protection (EP). EMET is a great tool but it is being sunset and what is great about WDEG, the fixes are built into the operating system whereas EMET’s were shimmed in. These newly built-in, mitigations are even more comprehensive than EMET.”
