• Delete (Y/N)? (Word 2000 SR-1)

One of the users at my company, when using the Delete key to delete a character in a Word document, gets a status line prompt, “Delete (Y/N)?”. She has to press Y for the character to be deleted.

I have searched the online help, MSKB, etc. to no avail. I seem to remember this happening to occasional users even back in the Word 6.0/7.0 days. Does anyone know what causes this, and how to correct it?

      Gary,

Check Tools, Options, General and see if Help for Wordperfect users is checked. If so uncheck it and see if that helps.

Thanks. The analyst who took the call didn’t make a note, so I’ll have to try that the next time such a call comes in.

In the meantime, I have been trying to replicate the behavior, and I cannot. Even if I check the Help for Word Perfect users, I still cannot get Word to prompt me before deleting text. Strange (?) that I cannot find reference to this in any Microsoft documentation.

Are the WordPerfect help options turned on in Tools, Options, General?

Yes. I have tried checking the Help for WordPerfect users, and also tried checking the Navigation keys for WordPerfect users. Neither option changes the manner in which the Delete key behaves on my PC.

          Gary,

If that is not the solution, try searching this forum for the words Confirm AND (select the And search option) Delete, as I think alternate solutions may have been posted in the past.

Thanks. I should have done that in the first place… doh.

The problem was, the user was trying to delete more than one character of text – block delete, in other words. And it seems that either one of the two WordPerfect options will trigger this.
