Deleting .ASF File

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1, fully patched, up to date.

I used the latest version of VLC to try to convert a 23 minute 720p MP4 video file to a file native to Windows Media Player.

The result was an ASF file of just under half a gigabyte. It wouldn’t play and supposed to be 13 minutes long.

I have tried to delete it using the GUI and also at the command prompt. No success. My latest attempt was to right-click and click on ‘Delete’. The response was NOT that it could not be deleted. The response was ‘Preparing to delete’. I started this latest attempt to delete 7 hours ago (!) and it continued to show the same ‘Preparing to delete’ 7 hours later.

I am thinking of trying to use Linux (Ubuntu 14.04) to get at this file and delete it.

Any ideas?

Note that your AV may flag it during installation, but the program is safe.

Always check for bundled unwanted extras when downloading and installing any new software and be sure to decline them. Use custom install when it’s available.

I looked at Unlocker but it seemed to require me to install a Bing toolbar, which I didn’t want to do. I ended up booting Ubuntu 14.04 64bit in the trial mode (‘don’t install’ mode) off a DVD. I then used the Files program in the Ubuntu GUI and found my file, right-clicked it and sent it to the Trash. I then found my file in the Trash and permanently deleted it.

I have since rebooted the computer in Windows 7 and it all seems OK ,,, so far!

I had tried to use Safe Mode but in my particular machine in Safe Mode Windows Explorer is almost useless: it keeps restarting.

SuperAntispyware Premium has a folder/file deletion module. However, it’s not free.
