Sometimes my Dell Vostro 7590 laptop running Windows 10 pro 2004 from a SSD gets balky … the cursor jerks as the mouse moves and programs are slow to start. Virus scans show nothing and the Task Manager is not very helpful. I have found that rebooting windows fixes it. Today I decided to experiment to see if logging off would eliminate the balky behavior without rebooting. I had never logged off this way before. I clicked <Log Off> and the screen went black. The user login screen never appeared. Hitting the power key causes the screen to blink and that’s all … no full shutdown, no reboot. It’s acting like a boat anchor, help please!

Hold down the power key to force a power off.
Press the power key to fire it up again.

      What do you get?

      cheers, Paul

      Hi Paul_T,

That did it! I had to hold the power key down for over 30 seconds to force the power off. It took several tries to find that out. Anyway, itโ€™s working again. Iโ€™ll probably forget about trying to log off a user in the future.

Your question of “Why?” still remains. I’ve had it happen several times, also on Dell hardware and runnng win10 pro at v2004. In our case we have 2 admin users and I’ve learned to ensure that 2nd user has nothing running before 1st user is logged off. Several switch users then machine is shutdown when both users are logged off.

Just to add; my Dell (XPS 2720 all-in-one) also has SSD (32 GB) but I’ve long since lost it’s caching ability with intel RST. Since a windows re-install, Iย  see a Recovery partition followed by New Volume (D:) at end of Disk zero but that’s another item on my to-do list.

another black screen today requiring forced shutdown. This one was not following a logoff, instead, both users were logged on and the machine went into sleep mode after designated time elapsed.ย  Would not come out of sleep mode. Things back to normal after restart. A bit concerning at this point.

First thing to try is updating video drivers
