    Hi all

I don’t know if this is at all possible, but if it is, I’m sure this is the best place to find out!

I have a master ‘to-do’ list in Excel, that I would like displayed on my desktop as a constant prompt about what needs to be done next. The content doesn’t need to be editable on the desktop (I’m sure that’s not possible) – I would go into Excel to make changes. I have seen a couple of pieces of shareware that display the content on the desktop, but they are based on the very rudimentary “Outlook today” task list.

Can anyone suggest a relatively straightforward way to do this? I’m pretty sure it is going to involve HTML or XML, so we’d need to cater for the fact that there is some code in the XLS file to look after matters such as auto-sorting the contents.

As always, I’m grateful in advance for any suggestions from the lounge

    Best regards

    Neil

The simplest way would be to size it as you wish in Excel, capture a screenshot, save as a JPG, and make the JPG you desktop or just have it open all the time with a picture viewing program.

Thanks for your reply, Joe. Unfortunately this approach won’t work as the content of the file will change regularly. Since posting yesterday, I have found a number of tools for turning a Flash file into the wallpaper, so it may turn out that the simplest thing to do is create a simple Flash application and use that… but I’m sure it’s possible to do it with Excel & HTML / XML… I’ll keep on hunting.

        Cheers

If you are going into Excel to update the information anyway, just capture the data in a screenshot again and replace the file you created first. Then refresh the desktop. Why make it more complicated than that?
