Device Manager error (WXpHe)

I recently installed a marvellous Netgear ADSL modem / hub. All seems to be Ok. However when checking the Device Manager I see an error – see attached screenshot. I have tried removing it and re-booting but it’s a persistant item. I have tried both the Netgear and Windows Cd’s in attempting to find a driver but can’t find a location anywhere. Any one able to help please?

When you right click the entry for ethernet controller in device manager, then left click properties are you getting any specific error information that could help–a device manager error code?

How about if you start>run>eventvwr.msc>OK under system and application categories>expand the box. Are you seeing any warnings or errors concerning ethernet controller or your network card there scrolling up and down for the last few days’ entries?

Just been to, downloaded and installed Netgear firmware update. Update took Ok. Re-booted Pc, Ethernet controller still in query. I really must be missing something here – apart from my marbles – ah ha?! another network card has appeared….??? Both working Ok

I’m not sure why this would necessarily work to remove that bang in the DM entry if you have downloaded an updated driver from the site and it has not, and I always try to go to the hardware manufacturer site or a reliable drivers update site–there are many because Windows tends to sometimes plug and play drivers that are generic and not always the highest quality or the latest for some hardware devices.

But when you get Device Manager Error 28 you can always try in device manager rt, clicking the 1394 Net Adapter entry>left click properties>driver tab>press update drivers button.

Thanks for that – tried it and then scanned for hardware changes. no change. Any other ideas please?

As Jefferson suggested, it could be your 1394 port – or have you an on-board network controller, built into the motherboard? These typically need to be disabled in the BIOS.

As a side note, updating the firmware is not going to solve a driver issue, they are two separate things. Firmware is the chip on a hardware device that contains basic instructions, and the driver is the software component that allows an operating system to interact with a hardware device. The firmware does not interact with the OS; it controls the hardware itself. As such it will never present a page in device manager in Windows, because no driver is required for it to operate.

Does that make sense?

You’ve said that everything seems to be OK, so I have a question. There have been times in previous versions of Windows, like 95 and 98, where some Gateway machines where I used to work, would show “yellow-marked” unknown devices in Device Manager that none of us was ever able to figure out. Since the machines, as far as we could tell, worked perfectly in all respects, we gave up trying to find out what the entries were. If you deleted the suspect device and it keeps coming back, BUT the machine otherwise works OK, including networking, why don’t you just let it ride and see what happens? Otherwise, all I can think of is to remove the ADSL modem and try another to see where you come out.

Albeit you haven’t indicated the manufacturer of your motherboard, NVIDIA does make motherboards and that might be why you have an entry under the network adaptor section for NVIDIA. If your motherboard is produced by NVIDIA or has NVIDIA chipsets then perhaps you might want to visit http://www.nvidia.com/page/mobo.html%5B/url%5D to see if there are any driver updates that might help resolve your problem.

Oops Sorry, my motherboard is an Asus, as recommended by PcPro magazine, with 1Gb ram. Ok, you and everybody who has been so kind to respond,
I’m a thinking that I’ll remove sharing, then network software and then cable and the card, shut off Pc.
Re-boot, inspect, then close down. Replace network card; re-boot.

Check the driver for the Nvidia Network Adapter. I know it isn’t showing any errors, but is not that the point through which the ADSL modem makes contact with your machine, and is it not so that you have not installed any new hardware to your configuration – other than the ADSL modem?

Hi, Thanks for that, I do appreciate the feedback I am receiving. Nothing, ab-so-lute-ly nothing of a hardware nature has been installed since the network card and ADSL modem. Even Norton was installed as the last programmes.

1394 is your Firewire port.

Try “disabling” the “Ethernet Controller” device. That should tell you whether you need it.
