Probably you must connect to the Internet from each user account when you logon the first time, and then switching between accounts that are already connected.

For discussion about User Switching, see Woody’s Windows XP Vol 1 No. 2

Just to let you know I have never had that problem in XP Pro – even if you completely log off the connection stays there. The only thing I can think of is to check whether the connection is available to all users.

        …Hi Mel
Yes, the connection stays (if you ask it to) when you log off, but it drops when you try to log on again. If yours doesn’t do this, let us know. There are times I’d like to be able to keep a connection up yet be able to re-log.

        Cheers

My connection has (touch wood) never dropped off at all – we are able to switch users multiple times. and or log off users. I also use Internet Connection Sharing on some connections and this also does not make any difference. I use XP Pro.
