The dial-up connection to my ISP frequently starts itself after I have logged off MSIE and Outlook Express and disconnected the phone line. The connection is POT under W98SE. I have checked the modem and ppp logs and found nothing unusual. After dialing the connection just sits there. I have double checked for viruses (Norton 1/12 update). Outlook Express is set to NOT check mail unless connected. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this?

Check your TaskScheduler for the “Windows Critical Update”. If your computer is sitting inactive for a period of time, it will kick in, and require a connection to the Internet.

I too have had this occur in the past. I went through everything, checking schedulers, live updates etc. Did through scan for trojans and such like that might be trying to send info out. Ran OptOut to make sure had nothing left by any web adds. Even deleted trusted cookies in case they were doing something. Although the problem stopped I can’t say for sure what if any of the above did it. Unfortunately it did it again the other day but only the once.

A lot of software is adding this feature, to auto check to see if there is a update and or other type of service.
Quicken and Quick Books will do this. RealPlayer is another. Check to see what is running at start up and you may find out what is doing this.
