Difference between a dynamic cumulative update and a cumulative update?

When I search for a specific cumulative update for my home Windows 10 Pro 22H2 system in the Microsoft Update Catalog, I find two versions. One is described as a “Dynamic Cumulative Update” for products “Windows 10 and later GDR-DU”. The other is described simply as a “Cumulative Update” for products “Windows 10, version 1903 and later”. How do I know which one is applicable to my system?

The dynamic ones are normally used in businesses when they are jumping from one older build to another.  If you are a standalone patcher you just need the cumulative updates.

Another major difference.

Cumulative Updates are .msu files which can be installed by simply running the downloaded file.

Dynamic Cumulative Updates are .cab files and have to be installed using DISM.

Yes, I can understand that. I’ve used cumulative updates with Windows 7 and they were .msu files.

also “dynamic updates” can be easily integrated/slipstreamed onto ISO/ESD installation media (when creating custom install media for Win10/Win11) using dism.exe as well
