Difference Betwteen System Image and Drive Image?

Acronis seems to make a distinction between a system image backup and a drive image backup. What’s the difference? How do I determine which I need? Or do I need both?

What version of Acronis do you have? I have Acronis 2010 and I can’t find any reference to system image backup.

In Acronis a System backup is file by file, a drive backup is sector by sector. Or is it the other way??? 🙂
Mostly a matter of preference, however they may some differences in restore options between the two.
The help file details this.

Must be in one of the newer versions of Acronis then. Sector by sector is an option of drive backup in 2010 and is slower than file by file and creates a larger output.

Is it Acronis True Image 11? That one included a System backup option that saved only registry, boot files and “important” system files.

If in doubt, just choose drive image backup and select all your disk drives. That will work.

I have Acronis 2010, 2011 and 2013 and see no reference to a different type backup. I do see a sector by sector option, but otherwise no System Image versus Drive Image.

In EaseUS Todo Backup, if you create a System image, you can then mount it like a disk drive and copy individual files out of it. Not sure if it’s the same with Acronis.
