• disk cleaner with option to archive

    Hi,

(Win XP). I’ve got lots (far, way too much) of disk space consumed by left over service pack files as well as temp files and others.

I just let the ms_auto_updates install service pack 3. (which likely added on yet even more leftovers).

I want to gather up any and all unneeded files and then choose to move them all to a folder where I can then copy them all across my network to a more powerful computer where I can then zip them up and burn them to DVD with their paths intact.

Thus, in the event that any of ’em become needed, (I have ’em archived on DVD).

IOW, I want to do a “towards the aggressive” disk cleanup and also have protection until it is known that I don’t need anything from archive.

So, is there a serious cleaner utility with an option to move or copy rather than to just delete?

Or, otherwise, how to do a very serious and safe removal of copious amounts of disk hog junk?

    Thank you.

    Alan.

      Welcome to the Lounge!!

You should always be able to delete files in the temp folders. Typical Temp folders for XP are located at C:WindowsTemp and C:Documents and SettingsusernameLocal SettingsTemp.

You can also delete any folders under C:Windows that begin with $NTUninstall. These folder contain the files needed to uninstall hotfixes. As long as your system is running fine you don’t need to be able to uninstall patches. You can also delete .log files under C:Windows that bgein with KB. Those are patch installation log files.

You can use a free tool such as CCleaner – Home[/url] that many Loungers are fond of. Be sure to take the Tour online and review all the settings before you use it.

How much is shown when you open ‘Disc Cleanup’ ???

You can delete all directories under Windows called $NTUninstall. These contain the leftovers from updates and are not required unless you want to un-install the update.
You must keep the directory windowsServicePackFiles because this contains the files needed for system file replacement.

You can also use TreeSize Free to see what directories are consuming the most space.

You can visit my homepage and click on Disk Cleanup. The same techniques work in Windows 7.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
