I’m trying to run Dism /Online /Cleanup ……but I’m getting told “the source files could not be found”(screen shot 2)
When I run Dism/………….Scanhealth it says “the component store is repairable” (screenshot 1)
Also no luck with sfc /scannow as it says “could not repair.
I guess I am asking what “the source files could not be found” means. I’m running WIN 10 on a laptop which has been shutting down on its own and last night after shutting down it gave me a blue screen on start up and I got it going again by the Restore Point option. Seems OK now but its still acting strange. I thought a recent reset (refresh)had it good. Thanks Pete.42137-scanhealth42138-restorehealh

You might find this M$ support page helpful “Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool” at https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/947821

DISM in Win10 should be much the same as in Win8.1.

Not sure I understand the source thing, where exactly is MY source???

It’s says “THE source files could not be found” and I also don’t get it.

If it happens again, run a sfc /scannow to see what it reports.

This could fix any corruption so running another /restorehealth cmd after should come up clean.

If the BSOD created a memory dump file, use BlueScreenView to see if it finds one and analyses it for you.

Yes I ran the above program and it never had anything to report. Right before the first crash I got this got this (screenshot)42160-before-crash But never mind as getting off the subject of “Dism…can’t find source.” Just letting you know I have been trying to follow your advice. Laptop is running OK not great like after the recent reset. Mind you the reset in WIN 10 is not like refresh in WIN 8.1. Maybe that is because WIN 8.1 had “recimg utility” so replaced more after the refresh.WIN 10 reset wiped far more so took more to set back up. Whoops off the subject again. Cheers Pete.

To get help with the DISM command type (in an admin-level command prompt window):

      DISM /?
      (enter)

If you need help with a particular switch for the command then type something like:

      dism /online /?
      (enter)

to see what options are available.

    • #1529701

The Source is Microsoft. DISM is trying to download a healthy image of the Component Store via Windows Update, which it needs to replace the corrupted files in the Store. Its failing, suggesting that Windows Update service (wuauserv) is not running.
Before typing the DISM command make sure the wuauserv is running by typing this command:

      net start wuauserv

      • #1529702

OK I did the net start wuauserv and it said started, ran the DISM command again and still says source files could not be found. Again, I still don’t understand what command I should use to point to some source file on my WIN 10 system. I read this DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Note Replace the C:RepairSourceWindows placeholder with the location of your repair source. For more information about using the DISM tool to repair Windows, reference

What is the location of my repair source???

    • #1529705

There’s a section in this article which deals with when Dism cannot find the source files and if you have to mount them, then I would think their location would be C: although I’ve seen it reported that this cmd still failed to find the files.

ran this command from command prompt (admin) Dism /Image:C:offline /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:c:testmountwindows and it fails unable to access the image

You need to download a Windows 10 ISO, if you don’t already have one, from here.
Right click on the saved ISO and select “Mount”. This will give you a new drive letter to use with DISM.
Now run DISM and point it at the new drive letter: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:SourcesInstall.wim:1 /LimitAccess

        cheers, Paul

I have run Dism pointed to WIN 10 Media I downloaded to a USB which Paul T pointed me to (thanks Paul) and run the command in his post but I’m still getting the “can’t find the source”. I have looked over all the advice which has been given and tried plenty and I can’t get Dism to run. All my failed window updates are all successful now so it shouldn’t be that causing it. Is this a case for Tweaking Windows .com. I don’t have it right now but last time I was going to use it in win 8.1, when I had it running in safe mode there was so many box’s to tick and different parts to it I never used it:huh:. I done a refresh recently and I thought that clears up all this. So my question is should I be looking to Tweaking.com. My laptop is running good now but I would like to clear this up. Thanks Pete.

I downloaded Win 10 but this time to my laptop not a USB Drive. Can someone please tell me if I carry on with the installation (see screenshot) will it be the same as doing a reset. I already have WIN 10 and I am trying to install it again so what will happen if I click next. What I am trying to do is mount another ISO on C: so I can point Dism to it but I have ended up with this situation. Thanks Pete42176-win10-installI’m not keen on another reset so a little worried about clicking next.

Well I have got my laptop running as it should thanks to this Paul’s link here .After another reset it was still in poor shape so after downloading WIN 10 ISO to my C: I went ahead and clicked on “Keep personal files and apps” and the process was similar to refresh in WIN 8.1 as my chrome browser was still intact after it, unlike WIN 10 reset (keep personal files option) which wipes plenty and still does not whip things into shape.
Anyway after resetting with a downloaded ISO “sfc/scannow” runs successfully and Dism exe/…. runs successfully with no problem.
But I have to say that I can see no way to mount the download from anywhere. I can right click on “Bootable rescue disk”…”Disk Image File” and I get “Mount” which gives an extra CD drive. (no idea what to do with that:huh:)Life is good again.Pete

Try this. Copy and paste the following:-

      net stop wuauserv

      cd %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution

      ren Download Download.old

      net start wuauserv

      net stop bits

      net start bits

      net stop cryptsvc

      cd %systemroot%system32

      ren catroot2 catroot2old

      net start cryptsvc

    • #1529735

That command is telling Windows to look in c:testmountwindows for the image files. If you have not put the files in there manually it will fail.
You need to specify/download the image files – I don’t know how to do this.

      cheers, Paul

    • #1529736

Did you try the one in my first linked article –

      Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:SourcesInstall.wim:1 /LimitAccess

Where X is the drive letter where the ISO is located.

    • #1529739

      Which ISO?

      cheers, Paul

    • #1529753

      FYI

you can use Group Policy Editor (I think you need W10 Pro for this) to assign a source.
      https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825020.aspx

Could this be a firewall problem prohibiting a program from accessing the Web ?
Have you checked the 2 logs?

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

Did you change “X:” to the drive letter of your mounted ISO?

      cheers, Paul

Did you change “X:” to the drive letter of your mounted ISO?

        cheers, Paul

Yes I did change the letter Paul, I ran it with your command “Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:G:SourcesInstall.wim:1 /LimitAccess’ (could not find source….error 0x800f081f)
        and also with “
        Dism /Image:C:offline /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:G:testmountwindows” This gave me (please see screenshot)42158-Unable-to-access
This has me thinking I have not read your post correctly and have not mounted the saved ISO. You have said, Right click on the saved ISO and select “Mount”. This will give you a new drive letter to use with DISM. ” What I done was “Create a download media for another PC” with the download tool (64 bit version). This gave me (next screenshot) on usb G: so I pointed to G:

        42159-WIN10-on-G-drive
Is this correct. If not how do I mount the new downloaded image OR was I supposed to download it to my C: and mount it there.
At one point “sfc /scannow” got stuck on 41% ??? Thanks for everyones time.Pete

The first link I had posted in my Post #9 also referred to that command but step #7 in my second link http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7808-dism-repair-windows-10-image.html gives an alternative command for the .esd file and its location.

However if everything is okay now then perhaps just a sfc /scannow to confirm would suffice, but there are Reparse, missing CAT and MUM Packages that a sfc /scannow doesn’t scan for or can fix.

While the Tweaking.com program can fix the Reparse points which affect WUs, any missing Package files will need to be manually installed, which posting the pre-scan report in the Forum/Computer Help section of http://www.tweaking.com will receive help in doing this.

However, as the updates have successfully installed then you shouldn’t have any Reparse problems, but the default checked items in the All in One program are usually sufficient to repair most problems.

Normally when you download and save something it would go into the Downloads folder and only having Win 7 which doesn’t have the Mount feature, I don’t know where that would put the ISO files when you do mount them although the tutorials talk about using the ISO disk.

However, in IE you can change the download destination to Windows (C: ) which could make it easier to nail down which drive letter to use and I think it would be better to download and save the ISO onto the affected computer.

I’m not sure having reset Win 10 if that forgoes your option to roll back even within the 30 day cooling off period, but reverting to your previous OS and then redoing the upgrade again could be an option as “running OK not great” doesn’t sound like the reset did a very good job.

Did you ever get a sfc /scannow to complete ?

An alternative is to run chkdsk without any parameters – this is a read-only mode and doesn’t fix anything but will advise what to run should it find any corruption.

Similarly, the cmd dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth will give a report on the status of the system, but I don’t think it would report any bad sectors on the HDD as the chkdsk cmd could.

      • #1529959

I ran Chkdsk in safe mode and got a good reading (No bad sectors).I have SSD for C: and D:.
I am unable to revert to win 8.1 as I deleted my windows Old folder but I had so much trouble downloading WIN 10 that I wouldn’t want to do that.
Scannow still says “unable to fix” and even got stuck on 41% and I had to stop it with Task Manager.
I will try to transfer this WIN 10 download to C: and see what happens mounting wise.. Can you tell me if the recovery drive I created can be used with Dism or is that something different again. Thanks again. Pete.

    • #1529999

      You too and Good Luck.

Before I run anything major like the WR program, I create an external system image as a back up to the registry back ups the program does.

    • #1530012

Clicking on Next with that default setting will give you another reset, but if you close that window then go to where you saved the ISO, right click on it and select Mount and then I think you will be able to use C: if you have saved it to C: – but I’m not sure what Paul meant either by “This will give you a new drive letter”.

    • #1530036

Mounting an ISO gives you a new drive letter, effectively an extra CD drive.

      cheers, Paul

    • #1530043

      Thanks for clarifying that, Paul.

    • #1530240

      Well – that’s good news 🙂

You would substitute the X at WIM:X with the drive letter that gives in the /LimitAccess cmd and that should identify that as the source.

I gave up on the Dism…offline/limit access…. idea because I simple am unable to mount the downloaded ISO.I can run Dism online as it should now. I only mentioned the “rescue Disk” which I am able to mount just as an example to show that was the only thing mountable anywhere. I have a rescue disk on a USB to use to start the computer if It wont start, that much I know but it is only 207 mbs so it can’t be used as a WIM:E. If I ever need to do a reset again I will do it this way.(download a fresh WIN 10 IOS) Pretty much solved now things are running great. 🙂
