During last week’s video I recommended that you look for a backup software that adjusts the boot menu so you can easily get under the operating system

But wait there’s another way…. you can access Windows Settings by right clicking on the Start Menu. Then navigate to the System then the Recovery section. In the Recovery settings, under the Advanced startup section, click Restart now.

I take it that the above sequence is for those on Windows 11? The reason I say that is because I’m on Windows 10 22H2 Pro with the December updates installed and that exact sequence doesn’t work for me because there’s no section (or menu item) labeled “Recovery” in the “System” window that appears after selecting it when you right click on the Windows 10 Start Menu, at least not for me.  🤔

In Windows 10, I have to right click on the Start menu and then click on “Settings”, then select the “Update & Security” item and then on the left side menu of the new window that opens, select the option labeled “Recovery”. The last sentence of the above quote is still the same, just a different way to get to that point.

Makes me wonder if I’ve changed a setting that’s making me have to go through what I described instead of what Susan described.

Apologies, it’s under update and security (the brain knew where it was, the fingers typed differently)

I use a Lenovo laptop with came with a Novo button.

When the computer is off, you press this button to start the recovery system, the BIOS setup utility, or enter the boot menu.

Thanks, Susan this is good information.

My old Windows 8.1 PC has a recovery partition that I get into by pressing F8 on boot up.

Unfortunately, it contains Windows 8.0, which means that it installs Windows 8 and all its updates.  Then I have to go to the Windows Store to get Windows 8.1 and all its updates.  It’s a long process that way.  The partition was installed before Windows 8.1 arrived.

I have a system that boots to the prompt Shell>

Shell> EFI Shell version 2.40  Current running mode 1.1.2

      Device Mapping table

Disk 0: HardDisk–Alias (null)  Pci Root (0x0)/Pci etc

      Disk 1: through Disk 6

Windows has offered and tried startup repair without success. Does this mean I have to do a clean Windows install?

There is no hardware issue, no bad video cable 🙂

Re Shell prompt, I should add that in BIOS boot manager, I see 6 items, including “Hard Disk” and “Built-in EFI Shell” but no “Windows Boot Manager”.
