At least 1 car maker won’t implement the new Apple CarPlay, Tesla.
I use use CarPlay every day while driving.

Apple will push security updates between point releases.
This will enable Apple to respond faster to security treats.

iOS 16 gets automatic & standalone security updates

I don’t want anything running my car, or on my car. My car has no screens, which is the ideal number, and it has no connectivity with the outside world, which is also the ideal state. Perfection achieved; no need for further ado.

CarPlay – Waiting for the Apple Car?

I do not want Apple running anything in my car. I may find the most bestest glorious car on the lot, but if it has an Apple OS running it I’ll take a pass.

I’m with Ascaris about this, for any and every software publisher. The very old, true-ish jokes come to mind about Microsoft and Windows, from the early 2000s. Older than this article by them:

A vehicle manufacturer or two cut deals with Microsoft to have some of their software running a system or two in the car. But if their software crashed, you’d want to roll down all of your car’s windows, shut it off, then restart the car and roll up its windows.

Hmmm … Alex? Where in the article you have linked in you original comment here says anything about Apple running cars?

Or even about Apple CarPlay, which I understand is an infoitament/communications system one is free to install or not in a car and does not run the car or comes with a car. Unless one buys a Tesla, that might come with one installed, somehow, already (it being Tesla). Other high-end car brands are sort of “CarPlay” compatible, according to Apple:

      iOS – CarPlay – Apple:

      https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/

CarPlay is a smarter, safer way to use your iPhone while you drive. You can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and enjoy your favorite music

It also works as one of those widgets one can use to start a car from a distance: it enables one to start it from an iPhone (of curse).

But running the car? Not so much.

Oops! Not Alex, Susan! And, as far as I can tell, what came out in the conference looks like little more, right now, than an expression of some blue sky thinking by Tim Cook and Co. How likely is it that car companies, regardless of what Apple PR might have put out at the conference, are going to go ahead eagerly with an idea that opens them up to law suites and forced recalls if Apple then goes and makes some big SNAFUs with their modified infotainment system spreading beyond the central panel and grabbing all of the car dashboard? No, I don’t believe Apple is coming to take over our cars. Not any time soon, at least. Later? Who knows. Besides, Apple’s idea is not to control the car but to provide a fancier user interface, with the usual dashboard gauges and indicators looking spiffier or something. In their opinion.

And only as far as the car makers let it happen. So if there is a serious problem with a car because of this, one should take it up with the car maker, for making a bad decision.

Or better still, not buy a car with this kind of deal.

The integration goes deeper into the infotainment system, too. Instead of having to exit out of CarPlay to tune the radio or adjust the climate control (in cars without physical climate controls), youโ€™d be able to do both within the Apple CarPlay software

        You didn’t look very hard.
And CarPlay is not something you are free to install, it comes in the vehicle if supported by the manufacturer, you have no choice in this.

        cheers, Paul

    • #2452082

Pault T: Yes, one does haveย  a choice: the choice of which car to buy. Besides, which car manufacturer’s boss has come out and said anything in public about any of this, of their plans to adopt this much expanded version of CarPlay?

And “integration” here does not mean “controlling the car.” It is merely about adjusting the air conditioning or the heater and, or the fan, from the driver’s iPhone. Yes. OK. Why not? Whatever. Who cares? This “innovation” seems like a really lame thing to me, but apparently at Apple it’s the cat’s meow. And it’s also likely to sell more iPhones.

Notice that at Apple they have nothing to loose by enthusiastically shooting the breeze and pumping their fists, but at a car maker’s is a bit different from their perspective, when it comes at taking this seriously enough to start inverting some more or less serious money to accommodate Apple’s expanded gadgetry in their cars. And at the same time betting that this will do their business any good — that this bit of unnecessary and untested innovation replacing something reliable, safe, time-tested, that people are used to, this new Apple thing, will pay off handsomely and won’t hurt them, instead, in the end.
Betting that, ultimately, people will buy significantly more of their cars, not more of their less adventurous competition, because of it. And a hundred other practical, hard-headed business considerations. If anything is done, I expect to be a smallish run of a few “select” high-end card models from some big manufacturers, to see how it goes. Then …

So I don’t know about others here, but I am not loosing any sleep over this.

      Nighty-night.

You will need an iPhone for the new CarPlay.

      https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/next-generation-apple-carplay-wwdc-2022-preview/

..Apple says the first vehicles to feature this CarPlay OS compatibility should be announced in late 2023, so we’re still about a year out. It also hasn’t announced which automaker will be first to the market with the tech, but lists Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar-Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo and Polestar as partners that are “excited to bring this new vision of CarPlay to customers.”..

      * My Pioneer infotainment car system has 3 UIs : Pioneer native system, Apple CarPlay when connected to an iPhone, Android Auto when connected to an Android device.
I can switch between the 3 easily.

Alex, I don’t see any contradiction between what I wrote and you are quoting above and the facts so far. What is your point here?

Apple has been saying this and that: talk is cheap, facts are what count. At Apple they know the names of car manufacturers they would love tenderly, if these bought this idea they are making noises about. They call them “partners.” Translation: the Apple bosses have had lunch with their bosses, now and then, paying the bills and reporting them as business expenses. So now, at Apple, they can name some car brands. So can I. So far, that we really know, this is all just talk: Apple talk. (For further clarification, I refer the reader to my previous comment.)

And yes: I already have written (again, in my previous comment) that this idea at Apple, if it gets picked up by car manufacturers, will result in more iPhones sold.

And now I am really going to bed.

And, correct me if I am wrong, but using a cell phone to, for example, turn the heating/AC on, off, or set a different fan speed or temperature level inside the car cabin using a cell phone, is not different, from a practical point of view, from texting while driving. Authorities that implement and, or develop traffic safety regulations might have something uncomplimentary to say about that.

You are wrong. CarPlay moves the apps from your phone to the car console so you don’t touch the phone while driving.
