I have just installed a new file server, all new workstations, and Win XP/Office XP for a client with a little over 100,000 documents. When trying to access old documents that were based on templates on the old server (i.e. every document not based on normal, there is a significant delay while Word attempts to find the old template. The path to the letterhead, memos, brief, etc. templates uses a unc path starting with the server name and this server no longer exists.

I know I can go in and change the attached template to normal.dot” … but

Is there a way to automate this on open? I tried searching for the server name within the attached template property in code, but by the time the code runs (even on an autoopen macro), the template returned is “normal.dot”. However, in the user interface, the document template shows servernamesharetemplate name.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

      Hi Daryl:
I am not a VBA expert, but I found this macro hidden among tips that I save. I have not tried this. Unforunately, I did not write down the author, so I can’t give the appropriate credit. I’m not sure if this is exactly what you need, but hope it helps.
      Cheers,

This was helpful. Thank you! This code ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties(wdPropertyTemplate) go me to the old template name so I could program it to update based on the old template name. I still have no way to do this proactively but at least the users can easily update when document is slow to open.
