Our 12-year-old Cannon MX870 series scanner/inkjet printer has served us well and, in all likely hood, will continue to be a workhorse here in the office.

We never used the device as a printer.

But it is used to scan several hundred pages a month.

It is teamed with Adobe Acrobat X an app that dates from 2011.

Unfortunately, we are experiencing a problem with its document feeder.

All is well if we scan a stack of documents one side at a time.

However, if we try scanning both sides, the paper jams after the first couple of sheets make it through the feeder.

It is interesting in that the first five or six documents we scan pass through without a problem. But after that we can only scan one side at a time.

We have tried to clean the rollers with alcohol without success.

Any thoughts on how to correct the feeder problem?

Send the print to Canon to be fixed or replace with new printer/scanner.

My ~9 years old Samsung AIO laser printer/scanner/fax.. had paper jams too.
Was fixed by installing new feeder/roller..

Our 12+ year old MX870 is no longer supported by Cannon.

Out of curiosity, how much did Samsung charge to repair your 9 years old AIO laser printer/scanner/fax and how much was the cost of shipping?

pinch rollers? rubber conditioning fluid (meguiars rubber care -for cars helps avoid hardened rollers). I still do that on my ancient canon pixma once every few months (depending on volume paper useage)
oh, and the car rubber gets the same treatment twice a year (prevents rubber cracking with UV protection)

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

Microfix there are a lot of products that they sell, what is the one you use for rollers?

I took the printer myself to authorized Samsung/printers repair shop.
      Paid ~~180 for a full clean/repair..

We have tried to clean the rollers with alcohol without success.

I went thru special training classes out in San Jose back in 2004 to become “certified” as a scanner/printer technician for different brands and one of the things they “over-emphasized” during my training was to never clean rubber rollers with alcohol!

It “dries out” the rubber making the surface hard which causes it to loose its ability to grab onto the paper.

To proper grab a sheet of paper, the rubber needs to be soft with a “slightly sticky” surface. If the surface gets hard, it’ll “slide” across the paper when it tries to “pick” it (the official term for pulling the paper into the device) and either completely mess up the timing of the paper feed thru the device (i.e. paper jams) or just not pick the paper at all.

As @Microfix pointed out, you should use rubber conditioning fluid or another “non-alcohol” rubber cleaner (typically available at most office supply stores) to clean the rubber parts.

The “cleaning kits” I was issued while still working as an IT contractor (see below image) included a small spray bottle for cleaning rubber rollers that was labeled F1 Cleaner (not sure exactly what it was, but it definitively wasn’t alcoholโ€ฆ it smelled like dry-cleaning fluid.)

      CleaningKit

If the rollers are too worn out (i.e. the rubber leaves “noticeable” residue on the paper), they need to be replaced.

They’re what’s know as “consumables” and the replacement part numbers and service intervals will normally be listed somewhere in the manual.

In most cases, new ones can be obtained from office supply stores, online, or directly from the manufacturer for a reasonable price.

What Microfix said about the conditioner. I took a quick look for rebuild kits but found nada.
FWIW this is the service manual:
