Does anyone remember Eudora?

Yes I know it’s the equivalent of a clay tablet, but look how well they have lasted. It’s ancient, so am I, so it suits me perfectly. But just lately I’ve run into a problem getting mail. I was in Bali for a month and it worked perfectly: returned to California and I got error messages. (See attached.) I have contacted MyDomain, the ‘host’, if that’s the right term. Told them the account settings I have been using for years. Their support assure me that they’re all okay…but I still get these error messages which mean nothing to me.

Any other old fogey out there who has a clue?

From what I read on the ‘net Eudora has been transferred to Mozilla who publishes Thunderbird. I’ve heard good things about FossaMail, just now downloaded but won’t get to try it for a couple of days.

I remember Eudora Pro way back in my Windows for Workgroup 3.11 – Windows 95-98-98SE days! Never got an error like the above though; when I switched from Dial-Up to DSL & Windows 7, I lost Eudora connectivity and had to switch to Mozilla Thunderbird; then had to switch to eM Client 6 – so far so good!

Thanks for the replies. For me Eudora has continued without a hiccup since Win 3.0, through Win 7, dial-up, DSL and now 200mbs cable. Then these errors appeared without any changes to anything.

I have downloaded and installed FossaMail. Looks like a decent GUI, and I was able to get my e-mail off the server too. I was even able to import the address book from Eudora. One problem left, can’t import the mailboxes, got another pesky error message:-

“Unable to open the temporary file C:UsersMy nameAppdataLocalTempnsemail-2.eml. Check your ‘Temporary Directory’ setting.”

In that folder there are 2 files: ‘nsemail.eml’ and ‘nsemail-1.eml’, both created when I installed FossaMail. But no ‘nsemail-2.eml’.

I tried ‘Help’ but that took me to a Thunderbird help page which unsurprisingly is all about Thunderbird.

That error looks like your Avast is using MiTM tactics to allow it to scan mail you receive over TLS/SSL. As long as you are using Avast then I’d trust the certificate and all will be well.

Thanks Paul, I did click on ‘Yes’ after the first warning, then came the next one, clicked on ‘Yes’ again, then I’m left with the failure warning.

However, I do like the look of FossaMail, not quite Eudora, but I could live with it, if I can get it to import the e-mails from Eudora. The trick is to find the FossaMail help/forum/someone who knows how to achieve that.

Years ago, I tried Eudora because a friend suggested it, but….
no more than I had it installed, my Anti-Spyware program deleted it. Hmmm!

Well, of course I didn’t want Spyware on my PC, so I went back to Outlook Express. NO Problem!

Not only do I remember it, I’m still using it. Yeah, I’m a dinosaur, and used a clay tablet! I’ve had this problem, more than once. Try the fix described in the thread below. And you may have to do it more than one time. It’s like another dinosaur told me early in my career – sometimes you have to do it 3 times just to convince the computer that you really, really want to do that.

Also – Note the list of certificates in the 2nd screen shot. Each item on the list may or may not be expandable. If it is expandable, check each item. That pesky little scull can hide in more than one place. Good luck!

My son started calling me a dinosaur in his teens, but little did he know how true it was! I’ve been using Eudora since 1989, and it’s still going well on Win10 with the venerable Version 7. The only problem I have ever had was the upgrade from W7 to W10 and that took a few hours of web-search to find a solution to the compatibility issues. While I can’t offer any advice to the OP, I appreciate the link given by miladytn about certificates as there is no certainty that Eudora will cope with the tech world racing ahead of it.

There is a list (not a forum) that supports Eudora

A couple of years ago on this very forum I heard mention of a list that supported Eudora on present day computers. It changed my use of Eudora from fairly painful to a pleasant addiction.

First, it is a list. This means all of your interactions with it are by email. Archives have just been added and are searched by command line. Think of it as pre-HTML Internet. File downloads are 3rd party ad hoc.

Second, there are a number of different lists and sysops (titled List-Moms). Katrina Knight is the main Eudora Windows list-mom and is all-knowing and all seeing (OK, she makes a typo occasionally 🙂 ). She otherwise works as a self-employed computer consultant. She works on the list for free. She spends a lot of time daily on the list, does an excellent job and basically is the wall between users and chaos. If you think she is wrong about something, you just don’t fully understand the situation. There are a couple of other users that are pretty knowledgeable.

The rest of the membership is mainly logic-impaired over-60 geezers trying to impress with their knowledge of punch cards and 8″ floppy disks of which I include myself. We do have enough sense to try to do fund-raising donation drives for Katrina every so often. Give generously. Every night I pray she will not realize that life is short and putting up with us is . . . In other words behave yourself.

Note that geezers are very sensitive to imagined slights and can rarely see the obvious let alone beyond it. Yes, you can figure out on your own what those different types of posting are.

Fourth, Eudora:

[*]Qualcomm has not abandoned Eudora but no longer supports it. Eudora.com only exists in the archives. You are allowed to use the most recent version (7.1.0.9) for free in Paid mode with the following registration codes:

[*]Registered to: Eudora Paid Mode Without X1 Search
[*]The full and most recent Eudora 7.1 Manual.pdf file (5,579 KB).
[*]The final Eudora 7.1.0.9.exe installation file (16,595 KB).
[*]Replacement QCSSL.dll file (496 KB) fixes the bug of having to restart initial mail downloads for versions of Windows after XP.
[*]If you are using Eudora you want the most recent files above for both the many bugs fixed and the added features. I was going to attach or put links to these files but they may violate forum policy and one is too large. See the PS: below.
[*]Stop using the UTF8ISO UTF-8 plugin unless you like having most of your UTF-8 email unreadable and permanently corrupted. There are other options that will work – see Brianna’s Greek Viewer Eudora plugins http://www.drivehq.com/web/brana/plugins.htm. After installing note the options link in the very lower right corner.

Take your time, read all the links, get registered and lurk for awhile getting a feeling for how the list flows.

PS: There is also a Yahoo list https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/eudora/info. The good new is that it is HTML, searchable and has files for download. The bad news is that it doesn’t have Ms. Knight.

Edit: The reg code was changed to all zeros before this item was allowed to post. My understanding is that the reg code I had provided was officially approved by Qualcomm for such use. This has been affirmed by former employees on several Eudora user sites. I understand WS would want to remove the code to avoid liability but to the best of my knowledge this code is approved for use by anyone.

I used Eudora for ~15 years, until Outlook 2007 finally passed it out for my needs.

A wonderful program in its era, and good to hear that the lack of security updates in over a decade hasn’t bitten anyone here. I guess the user base is tiny now [was max ~7M iirc], and so not worth exploiting.

Another geezer (age 72) still using Eudora. Rock solid still. I totally agree with the comment on the mailing list and on Katrina’s value to those of us still using it.
