Based on the recommendations in both this forum and from OlderGeeks, I downloaded and installed Aomei Backupper Standard v7.1.2 the other day.  Windows Defender found PUADIManager:Win32/InstallCore right after that, something I’d not heard of.  When I looked it up, it seems to be regarded as some sort of malware.  I deleted the .exe file and uninstalled the program and I THINK I’ve got my devices (flash drive and PC) safe again.  I’m just looking for some reassurance. Thanks.

I have been using Aomei Backupper (Pro version) for several years and have never experienced any security alerts via Windows Defender or Norton. A scan of version 7.2.3 exe on VirusTotal gives a clean bill of health too with no concerns. There is an updated Standard version (7.2.3 on 7th June 2023) available at https://www.ubackup.com/changelog.html that may prove less troublesome for you.

PS. I did notice that a download of Backupper Standard v. 7.2.3 also downloaded a separate .exe file called PAassist.Std which is a free disk partitioning programme and might be annoying but this also gets a clean bill of health. This does not need to be installed with Backupper Standard. PAassist.Std did not download with the Pro version of Aomei Backupper.

PUADI (Possibly Unwanted Application) covers a number of apps that may or may not be of value.

Try Backupper without the additional partitioning app and see if you still get the message.
      Alternatively, try MiniTool ShadowMaker free.

      cheers, Paul

Thanks, Paul!  And thanks for introducing me to the MiniTools products.
