Normally, if you click on a link that points to a non-html page (such as a .doc or .xls file) IE opens a dialog box that asks if you want to “open from current location or download” There is also a checkbox that lets you “not ask this question again”
Some users have checked that box and now need to download a file rather than opening it.
How do we reset that choice?
Does anyone know where windows stores that info for that check box?
THANKS….
–Tim

AskWoody LoungerMarch 8, 2002 at 12:53 am #575034It must be in the registry — and I usually like to do things directly in the registry — but there is an easier way. Go to Folder Options (various pathways — my favorite is Start button | Settings | Folder Options…) and select the “File Types” tab. Find the File Type in question. If you don’t know the name of the File Type, but do know the extension (.xxx), then I can tell you what the File Type is — or you can search for it in your registry.
Let’s say you want to change this for Word Document files (.doc). Find and select “Microsoft Word Document” in the list of File Types. Click the “Edit…” button. Place a check in the “Confirm Open after download” box.
I believe that will do it. If not, let me know.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 8, 2002 at 5:36 pm #575195Hey Thanks RMRUCKER!
That does work.
In case you are interested, I use a utility called “Advanced Registry Tracer” and located the registry keys that are associated with that feature. In the case of MSWord, The registry entry is in the HKey_LocalMachineSoftwareCLASSESWord.Document.8 folder. The key [EditFlags]=1 is added when the box you mentioned gets “unchecked”
BTW… if you uncheck the “view in browser” checkbox, another key is added to the same registry entry [BrowserFlags]=8
Anyways…THANKS AGAIN!

AskWoody LoungerMarch 12, 2002 at 7:54 pm #575882Downloading a TIFF from the web. There are other sites they can download TIFF’s from, and I can download TIFFs from the one they cannot. Wang imaging is what they are using to open them, and the file assoc is correct, or they couldn’t open any. They do not get the File Download window, and it opens blank.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 12, 2002 at 8:42 pm #575888If they are not getting the File Download window, then the file is being directly opened by IE — is this correct? I am not sure IE can open a TIFF file. I will have to give it a try!
If they are not downloading the file, then Wang (Kodak) Imaging cannot be opening the file, and opening the file has nothing to do with the file associations. Instead, have them right-click on the image and have them select “Save Target As…”
Can you point me to a specific web site? Thanks.
