In firefox and IE10 when I download something after download I cannot open the containing folder with the right click option I get the following error.

    32511-containing-folder-error32512-container-folder-error

Ran SFC but it found no errors so now lost as to what happened.

Please help if you can. 🙁

      Clive,

What version of FF are you running, latest is 17.0.1.
Also which ad-ons are you using?
Does this happen for all downloaded files or just a specfic file type, e.g. .pdf .zip, etc.
I don’t have a problem with this feature works as advertised.

Thanks RG for your input greatly appreciated.

Using Firefox 18.0 (Updated today) and IE 10 preview.
It happens on all downloads regardless of type.

      Plugins:
      Foxit Reader
      Google Earth
      Google Update
      Java Deployment toolkit
      Java Platform
      Microsoft windows Media Player
      Shockwave flash
      Silverlight

      Extensions:
      Adblock Plus
      Avast Webrep
      better privacy
      Colorful Tabs
      Smartest Bookmarks

All these were installed when it was working correctly nothing was changed before or since (apart from Firefox update but was having same problem before update). all are up to date.

This may be in the wrong section as I don’t think it a FireFox/ IE problem but a windows one.
Feel free to move it if this the case.

    • #1360753

Seems no one has come across this problem before. Pity.
Have run SFC /scannow both in windows and in safe mode but found no errors.
I have run virus scanner on full scan (Avast Free), ran AVG from bootable CD, ran Trend Micro from bootable CD, ran Malwaresbytes Pro on full scan, ran Spywareblaster on full scan, but none of these have found anything.
I also ran Flashcookiecleaner which found nothing.
I also uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled version 17.0.1 but problem still remains as before.
If anyone has any idea what I can try next apart from a clean install of windows as restoring to an earlier image did not resolve it as I believe the image also had the problem. i would be eternally grateful.

      Clive,

Here’s something you may want to try.

[*]Uninstall FF using Revo Uninstaller making sure to get all the ancillary Registry Entries & Files.
[*]Run CCleaner both the Files & Registry Parts.
        [*]Reboot.
        [*]Reinstall FF but no add-ons.
[*]See if it works, if it does load the add-ons one at a time rebooting and testing after each.

Let us know how it goes.

      Hi R.G.
Thanks for the suggestion but that is exactly what I did when uninstalled Firefox 18.0 (Beta) and installed Firefox 17.0.1 (Non Beta). But problem still there.
As it does this also In IE 10.00 (preview version) I believe it is a windows problem not a Browser problem but if a system file has become corrupt I would have thought SFC would have detected it. 🙁

Would be nice to know how to associate a program to it and what program to associate as error message suggests.

Try the file association fix for “Folder” (bottom right) listed here: File Association Fixes for Windows 7

      Hi bruce
Thanks for tips. Tried both the folder fix and the LNK fix but was not successful.

Does this happen regardless of the file type of the downloaded file?

Do you have another computer available, and if so, does the same problem occur on the other computer?

      Group "L" (Linux Mint)
with Windows 10 running in a remote session on my file server

No I have no problem with my Laptop using Firefox or IE on same router via cable or wireless.

This sometimes happens when the name of the folder includes a full stop – windows misreads the part of the folder name after the full stop as being a file extension. I have also seen the same thing sometimes occur with customized folder icons.

        Thanks for the reply Mike.
Do you have any idea what the folder / file is that is used when right-clck in the download folder to go to the containing folder so I can check this?

    • #1363261

Have managed to resolve this only by doing a repair upgrade using win 7 disk inside windows. This did take some considerable time and caused some programs to be needed to reinstall to work but resolved whatever was causing the first issue.

Thanks to all that tried to help was very informative. 🙂

    • #1370530

Gave up on resolving this and did a clean re-install of win 7 problem now resolved even though took ages to re-install everything. 🙁

Thanks to all who tried to help with some very good suggestions.

Clive, now that things are working fine, Create your gold standard image, then a new image after each patch Tuesday. This will prevent having to go through that all again!
