Using the Media Creation Tool works great But!
How do I know what version I’m downloading?
Is there some place that this information is posted?
It would be nice if Microsoft would let us know when they post an update for download.

Second question; has anyone tried to copy the USB or DVD to a server or NAS and do the upgrade from that source, I think it should work?

Have you tried right clicking the iso & clicking Properties ?
When you hover the cursor on the iso file it should give a pop-up with info too.
Hope this helps.

edit— I used the mct for 10 & downloaded the iso & mounted it.

I’m in the process of taking screen shots of the 8.1 Pro iso which is installed on my computer.
If the install.exe shows the same version as my system information version then the 10 Properties screen shot I posted should be right.

My installed version is different from the iso version.
I installed from Windows Store.
But basically the same.

If I install from the iso I would have the iso version of 8.1 Pro.

You may benefit from contacting Microsoft. 🙂

I realise you have an answer, but when I hover over the download link, I see info in the F-Fox address info (bottom left of screen) which clearly shows the vn number (Win10_1511_…), and if I click on it, the dialog box shows what I am about to download:

whixh also shows the version. Is that what you wanted?

medab1, what you are trying to show me is not the answer to my question.
From time to time Microsoft updates the ISO file to a later version.
It is that version information I’m looking for. After I install it once, I can use a command prompt and the command “WINVER” to get the information of this ISO.
Knowing when Microsoft has updated the ISO so we would know to download the latest version, would be enough.
Because Microsoft seems unwilling to tell us this, the next best thing would be to know the current version sitting in the download.

The numbers you are trying to show me do not equate to the Windows version after it is installed.

As part of the install Windows checks for updates. So, you should end up with the most current version.

I think the ISO from MCT is likely to be always the version in the top row of the table on this page: Windows 10 release information

I started here (found with Google), then selected edition (W10), then language, then bit-ness (the options only appeared once the previous option had been selected) and got this:
