I just started getting this message on both of my CD devices. One is a Creative 52x ROM, the other is a Sony IDE burner.

This is a format, re-partition (using FDISK), and re-install of 98SE and 2000.

The error occurs in WIndows 98SE (‘A device attached to the system is not functioning’), Windows 2000, and from DOS when I boot the burner is accessible but fails when copying files after about 30 seconds with an INT24 message.

What is this error, what are possible causes, and what can I do to remedy it? I have absolutely no CD access and therefore the PC is (nearly) a paperweight until I can access those drives.

That seems to confirm my epxeriences. The drives fail in all operating systems, be it a DOS boot disk or Windows 98.

They are on separate controllers, and the only thing that changed recently was a BIOS upgrade (the flash memory was reprogrammed). Clearing the CMOS doesn’t appear to have helped.

Oddly enough, although both CD devices are on separate channels, I have a hard drive and Superdisk on each channel along with them and they both behave. But I did notice that 3 1/2 floppy “B” showed up in Windows Explorer. Where the heck is Windows 2000 pulling this information from? Does it read the system BIOS at boot time and cache it, or does it interact with it during operation? I always thought it was the former, that BIOS was cached and not necessarily used when the operating system was loaded.

Thanks for the input, I’ll disconnect all but the hard drive and start from there.

How do you set the “write” speed for this drive? Often, anything faster than 2x is too fast, but rather than giving you an error, the CD is unusable. Something to try…

That’s just it – I can’t set the write speed for it at all, because the OS will not recognize it.

The CD ROM will not even read the TOC of a CD, and the burner reads the TOC but is inaccessible from within Windows. I’ve removed them from the device list and let Windows re-discover them, and it doesn’t seem to have made a difference.
