I am helping a friend with their PC – they are using WIN98 (not SE) and I replaced the hard drive and reinstalled WIN98. They don’t have any of the drivers for the video card, faxmodem, and sound card. Is there any way to install these other than opening up the PC and getting the manuf/model for each card? Win98 did not have drivers listed for the devices…

Any quick easy down and dirty way to do this without having to open the box would be appreciated. The PC is a 300mhz PII – shouldn’t everything be detected by WIN98? USA

During my days at a computer repair shop I’d never found a better way than opening the case and getting make, model, and part numbers. FCC ID’s are very helpful too.

That’s what we were trying to avoid – but it seems inevitable. doh

You could give Belarc Advisor a try. It is a handy utility which builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware.
