If this is wrong forum, please move. I put this here because I think it’s a Win 10 issue.

    I have Win 10 home, build 10586.

This issue has been happening since I upgraded to Win 10 in Aug.

Dropbox error ‘Cant sync “filename” (permission denied).

I’ve tried everything suggested at Dropbox.com/help. Nothing helps.

As a workaround I changed to “Run as Administrator” in Compatibility properties. This can’t serve as a long term solution as I have to click on a UAC prompt at start-up.

Anyone else have this issue and a permanent solution?

      George,

To get around the UAC prompt you can create a Scheduled Task with/Run on Demand and Run With Highest Privledges. Then just call the Task from your shortcut.

      Shortcut Target:

      Code:
      C:WindowsSystem32schtasks.exe /run /tn "[COLOR="#0000FF"]YOUR TASK NAME HERE[/COLOR]"

      HTH

What are the user permissions on the file and directory?
Have you granted full access to everyone?

      cheers, Paul

I think the issue is that for some reason the Dropbox folder has the Read Only attribute. If I remove it it goes right back to read only.

The read only attribute on a folder does not mean the folder itself is read only. See Read-only File and Folder Attribute. The discussion pertains to Windows 10 even though the article says Vista,7,8.

I have not setup Dropbox on my Win10 computer but will be doing it today. I’ll let you know if I run into the same issue or not.

Well, I just finished installing DropBox on my Win10 machine and it works without any issues.

I agree the Read Only flag on folders is a red herring. However I found another thread on another site that recommended giving the group “Home Users” full rights on the folder and sub-folders. This appears to have worked as my dropbox is now up to date.

@gsmith-plm Setting up DropBox anew may get around whatever issue I had (upgraded from a Win 7 that already had Dropbox installed).

I had checked and found that My logon id had full access to the folder and subdirectories. I assumed that any program running under my Id would inherit them. I was wrong, apparently.

I don’t remember this ‘Home Users’ in Win 7. It doesn’t show on all folders but does in any under my user id. Is it a Win 8 and 10 thing or just 10?

Another thing I noticed is that after a repair install of the latest Win 10 that my account was changed to Normal Account from Admin, and the hidden Admin acct. I had activated needed to be reactivated.

It’s in Windows 7 as well.

In Properties, Security tab, click Edit… in the Groups or user names section.

In the Permissions window, click Add….

In the Select Users or Groups windows, click Advanced…

In the next window, click Find Now

A complete list of Users and Groups will display.

I see that. Just checked on my wife’s laptop. I wonder why it was the issue with DROPBOX on Win 10.

      Just a Heads up:

Had another issue today with Canon DPP software. It got permission denied (access denied) message.

Some research I’ve done. Google (windows 10 access denied) indicate a possibility that One drive may have something to do with this.

I also think it may stem from the fact that I upgraded from Windows 7 where I used a local log on, to Windows 10 with my Microsoft log on. I’m not sure how Win 10 connects my Microsoft id to the old local id.

      Here’s a link to something interesting on answers.microsoft.com http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-security/bug-windows-10-onedrive-default-settings-causing/43700b79-31a3-43c8-8d30-7863e40d9576

OK, I think I solved the issue in my post number 13.

First of all I think the One box idea is a red herring.

I think the issue may have to do with upgrading from Win 7 and also changing from local user (username(thisPC) to microsoft acct, and the fact that this issue was happening on my D drive. I noticed that my local username had all the proper permissions on this drive, so I changed user to my Microsoft acct and all appears to be working.

I may have disconnected my D drive when I first upgraded (can’t remember for sure), but is was connected when I did a repair install to the latest Win 10 (Nov update).

Perhaps we should call this user error. 😀

Just thinking out loud here… I can see why file ownership might be an issue under some circumstances. It’s not clear what happens, but others here have commented that when they did an upgrade, it created a new user account which created some problems. It’s not clear what the circumstances and sequence of events might be that would lead to this.

Are there two different User accounts on your computer?

    • #1540739

Here are the accounts I see when I click on my name in start:

      Administrator
      ASP.NET Machine Account
      Wife’s acct.
      Guest1
