DSO Exploit

Spybot said I had 6 entries with “DSO Exploit” (Data source object exploit–showed up in red), and after I tried to remove them they still showed up in Spybot. An example of one is
HKEY_USERS/S 1-5-18/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Internet Settings/Zones/0/1004!=W=3.
When I go into regedit, these items now have an “ab” logo, though I don’t know what this is (and nothing to the right–that is, it shows “ab 1004” with nothing else. I’m running Home XP, SP2.

Was it correct to try to remove this? Was it spyware? Was it part of XP SP2? What do I do now, ignore it when it continues to show up in Spybot?

I don’t know anything about this, but this is just something I picked off a spyware forum:

“DSO exploit is spyware that comes stock on a computer. It will not harm your computer. If you do want to get rid of it go into regedit(start, run, type regedit) Go into HKEY USER, and you must go to each of the listed items that ends in 18,19,20,and the long 21 but none that end in classes. If those you go to software, microsoft, windows, internet settings, zones, and choose 0 and in the right pane erase the value that is red and has a number of 1004. in spybot you can also see the path to delete it manually and then you dont really need my instructions. Sorry if i confused you ”

Thanks: Based on those posts, I’ll just leave it alone. But it’s interesting that the computer is old, and that item just appeared: I’m still wondering if it came with SP2? Anyway, Does the “ab” mean a registry item has been disabled?–just for my info.

There has been a thread running since mid June on the Spybot Support Forum about Spybot’s current inability to fix the DSO Exploit. As with all software, the Spybot problem will be fixed in the next release…!

I think you can ignore this if you are otherwise clean. As Charlotte has posted somewhere in this forum, I believe, these footprints can be left by code libraries used in legitimate as well as questionable software. By themselves, they don’t tell you anything or cause any harm.
