If you haven’t seen this video I recommend it highly.

So, I was inspired to see how far I could take excel in charting like his demo. You can see how far I’ve got with the attached file.

I’m not ruling out VBA – in fact I think it will be impossible to replicate the functionality of his display without it.

At this point I see two major problems with the chart.
    1) Labeling the bubbles with the country name
    2) Making the bubbles consistent from year to year. I’m not sure that the bubbles are using the same size scale from the beginning of time. Does this matter? I’m not sure since really the bubble size is a relative measurement anyhow.

Turning on “tails” will require an intermediate data set and a separate chart I’m sure.

    What do you think?

Just had a thought, if the source data is reorganized so that the header row is country.names that should cover the labelling issue.

Since a large group of countries is clustered near the bottom of the chart, the result of adding data labels is not very attractive:

Yeah, I notice that ultimately he grouped his countries by geographic regions and he had groovy popups instead.

      Ted Rules.

I’d love to offer my assistance on this, however I’m stuck using ’03. Nuff said. I’ll be following this though, those are some truly impressive charts.
