I use Process Explorer to see who is eating up CPU power. When I first noticed that Todo EaseUS was consuming about 3% of my CPU power, I assumed that some sort of disk indexing was running in the background, and decided to wait for it finish whatever it might be doing. I have yet to use the program, but a full month later, EaseUS still consumes its 3% while all it is doing is regularly pushing a nag screen onto my desktop asking me to buy their supposedly superior product. Meanwhile, software running regular version checks in the background, as in Adobe and others, are seen using 0.01%. Is this supposedly superior backup program really running my computer as a spam robot? Are the TodoUS programmers incredibly inept? Do others who have Process Internals Process Explorer and TodoUS see what I do? If there is no one on this very informed forum who is able to provide some definitive explanation, I will remove this poorly written (or malicious) program.

I wonder why this program, recommended in the uber-competent Windows Secrets Newsletter, appears to be so poorly written. Any ideas from forum members will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your ideas.

How many computers do you have it on? I just checked a half dozen systems and don’t see anything going on with ToDo. I don’t do any sort of file backup with it though, just imaging and cloning of partitions/disks so no process is running at all until those times. I did notice my Roxio burn monitor was sipping a constant 1-2% though…I don’t need that either!

This is one of those annoying programs that runs at Startup whether you want it to or not. Disable it with Autoruns and the program will only run when you start it.

I, to, find Autoruns an essential toolbox item. I’ve nothing against filehippo, which I’ve found useful and reliable, but out of courtesy to the authors, I prefer to refer users to their download site, rather than a third party’s, when possible. Autoruns’ home is at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.

Calimanco, which program – EaseUS or Roxio burn monitor? Also, if eliminated via Autoruns, won’t some of them “re-install” themselves back into startup and/or services?

I was referring to EaseUS, but Roxio is the same. Just check for one or more entries in Autoruns. I’ve seen the odd program that wont let you turn it off. Be suspicious of those and find out why. Most legitimate programs don’t have such virus like behaviour.

Thanks folks. Yes, I am in full agreement. I failed to communicate well that this is what motivated my original post. It’s not about loss of 2-3% of my processor time, but rather why my computer has devoted several billion CPU cycles of processing over the last month doing something about which the creators have not said a single word. That causes me to be deeply suspicious and concerned. BTW, I did finally discover another EaseUS process running which uses so little processing time that it is very likely to be the timer for the nag screen. The nag screen itself really bothers me in that it plops itself in the middle of my desktop at random times. All other nag screens I’ve ever seen show themselves when the app is run. EaseUS’s aggressive tactic, in itself, increases my concerns about the honesty and integrity of the creators. My next chore today will be uninstalling this suspicious code, following up with Ccleaner passes to remove any leftovers. I am only a little less suspicious of using Microsoft’s backup code, since they also run in an extremely black box, and whose integrity has been brought into question every time they have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar. The only thing limiting their sneakiness is that they have a reputation to protect. That can not be said of the EaseUS code, whose origin is an unknown operation in China. At this point, I am a bit embarrassed that I ever installed this very suspicious code in the first place.

          Again, thanks for your comments.

We’ve used EaseUS ToDo free version on our PCs at home for years. Recent versions do indeed generate a popup every day urging us to upgrade. So, i uninstalled it on one computer and used Windows 7 built-in Backup program to create a fresh system image and also set up scheduled backups. It doesn’t compress the system image to save space on the backup drive like EaseUS can do, and it’s more limited in how many system images it will keep. However, those are not drawbacks for us so we’re getting away from EaseUS now and relying on Win 7 and Win 8.1 backup program to handle everything. They work rather well!

        I agree in principle.

Most users need only use the built-in backup features in Win7 and Win8.

The important thing is that an accessible backup exists (best to backup to a USB HDD so the backups can be accessed from another computer if necessary).

I don’t know about the most recent versions, but I just disable the EaseUS Agent Service in Windows Services. Also, the most versions don’t have an entry in msconfig Startup that you can uncheck to keep it from loading at Windows start up? I do have an entry and I uncheck that, too.

Btw, I think what it’s doing in background is keeping track of anything that changes on your drive(s).

What or where is the best link to get EaseUS ToDo free version? I can’t find it.

i have had problems with easeus in the past so got rid of it and only use macrium reflect for backup and that has been foolproof over many backups and restores as i kind of get carried away sometimes…hahah i tend to stay away from chinese programs, packaged food and gas and battery-powered tools. just no trust in any of those categories. just my experience.

I used an unique email address (only for EaseUS) to order from EaseUS. Now I receive spam using this email address.
Either EaseUS has lax security or they sell the email list for extra profit.
I uninstalled EaseUS product then CClean-ed as well.

Having said that, not all China-made are bad. It is stereotypically a stereotype (Maybe DNA of USA has this old strand). If you stereotype it, then don’t buy all Apple products and most PC devices. My HP PC is made in China. So is my monitor … and my mouse, and …
By the way, we have a huge HUGE worldwide recalls on car airbag switch. Evidence of coverup is surfacing. And law suits follow no doubt. I imagine the air bag switch is made in China! (No.)

In addition to disabling items in Autoruns, you could also look at Services (as mentioned previously). I have not used Easeus, but in my experience some programs install services which run all the time, consuming resources unnecessarily. If Easeus does that, and a “service” is consuming your 3%, you can get around it by creating a batch file which enables and starts the service(s), runs the program to do your backup or whatever, then stops and disables the service(s) until next time you run it. (However, if the purpose is to constantly monitor for changes on the drive(s), this may not work.) You could also have a similar batch program running at startup, to stop and disable any services you don’t want running all the time – use with caution though.

Also, have a look in the Task Scheduler to see if any scheduled tasks have been created that you don’t want, and if so disable them – you can always re-enable if that causes problems.

Yes, we have one of those Western Digital My Passport Ultra portable hard drives (2TB). It’s very quick making backups on USB 3.0 (OK on USB 2.0 but slower, of course). Mostly we do System Images, and because the drive is small and portable it’s easy to use it with PCs in different rooms of the house.

It’s probably communicating with home for updates. See if there’s an option for turning off auto-updating. If it still occurs, try a repair or uninstall and reinstall.
