    Hi all

So I’m happy with my 7 ultimate 64 machine and just have nov and december updates to do.  Have current system backup ready on external if necessary.

If I should loose my mind and decide to go to 10, is there an easy way? Or just bite the bullet, unplug all hard drives except os and do fresh install?  Are there sneaky updates I need to install first if i update?

Is the free update still alive?

    Thanks

    Amber

You could do as you suggested or simply upgrade. I’ve done a bunch of upgrades over the last year from 7 to 10 and unlike in the past have had very few problems with it. Have one on my bench now and decided to try the upgrade rather than fresh install due to him having a gazillion programs and an enormous amount of data. After upgrading, converted his disk to GPT and enabled UEFI and secure boot. Everything appears to be working fine and saved me about a week of work!

Edit to add – You can always go the fresh install if the upgrade doesn’t work to your satisfaction and yes, the free upgrade still works.

If you have 7 or 8 and it is activated, the free upgrade to 10 should still work.   The steps are explained in Zdnet articles by Ed Bott.  If you have made a backup and checked that it is good, it should be pretty easy. Other than backup, make sure you know the passwords for bios, administrator account, and your normal local or Microsoft account name and password.
