Editing a boot.ini file?

I have reformatted a HD for a friend and installed XP Home on it for her. She has a second tiny drive that has Windows 98 but she probably won’t ever want to use it. Still, I decided not to format that drive until I am certain she is happy with XP. To keep confusion at a minimum, I would like to rid the boot up screen of the reference to Windows and only have Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition showing so she won’t have to make a choice. I am uncertain which line/or lines I should edit out of the boot file so obviously I need help! I’ve attached a pic of it.

Safest way:

Right-click ‘My Computer’ > Properties..
Select ‘Advanced’ > Settings…
Select the default operating system you want, then de-select the ‘Time to display…’ option
OK your way out.

One advantage is that it allows you to reverse the action simply by re-selecting the “Time to display…” tick box.

An alternative is to set the “Time to display…” seconds to zero which (appears to) have the same effect.

If you know you might need the alternative once in a blue moon, set it to 1 second. This is usually too short a time to be an annoyance or distraction, but does allow you to halt the boot up if necessary by smacking the keyboard within that 1 second grace period and not have to go into XP to change the boot-up settings and reboot.

Thanks for the extra information. It is an area I haven’t had to mess with before even though I knew about the boot.ini. I hadn’t realized that changing these items could be so simple. I appreciate your replies!
