Here goes my issue: Even though I’ve uninstalled VirtualBox and deleted all VB drivers from the System32 folder and also deleted any references in the Registry, this is what I get when I try to uninstall my 16GB pen drive:

    37279-Untitled

However, as you can see, this problem ONLY occurs with my 16GB drive and not my 8GB one. Both are Transcend drives and I must add that the 16GB pen drive was used once or twice with VirtualBox.

So is there any way I can remove the “Virtualbox USB” entry?

    TIA,

There may be a file called “autorun.inf” in the root of the 16GB pen drive that identifies it as a Virtualbox drive.

If you find it, look at it’s contents with notepad and see if it makes sense. If not, rename it or just delete it (and any files it references).

Thank you for your reply JC but I had already done a quick format on the pen drive THRICE. Anyways I went to the root and as I suspected it was empty. I went to the Folder Properties dialog and turned on the display of hidden folders and operating system files. Still no luck. Do you think a complete format will help?

I don’t think any further formatting will resolve the problem.

Since you are comfortable using the registry editor (regedit.exe), you could check the key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerDriveIconsF

and see if there is a value named “DefaultLabel” with a value of “Virtualbox USB” or anything similar (it could be stored in Hex code making it non searchable).

If so, just delete the value. I expect that will solve the problem.

Sigh….There’s no folder called DriveIcons in the registry…
Thanks as always for your reply.
      Anything else?

Now you need to narrow down if the problem is associated with a specific USB port (try others) and if the same label is shown if drive G is there or not. That will show if the problem is tied to the specific pen drive, the drive letter or the hardware it is talking to.

If the problem is tied to the pen drive, no matter the drive letter or the hardware port, then you could try the full format. Otherwise, just live with it.

That is the last of my ideas.

Hmm thank you very much for your help on this JC. I guess it’s just one of those Windows annoyances I’ll have to live with huh? Ah well, that’s life.

Hey just wanted to report that I finally managed to solve this problem today.

I heard about this app called USBDeview recently and I decided to install it on my laptop. Upon opening it, I found a Virtualbox USB listing and decided to purge it. After uninstalling it, I reconnected my flash drive, and lo and behold! The Safely Remove Hardware Menu listed it as “USB Mass Storage Device”! :bananas: This amazing little utility finally solved my problem!! Thanks again for your help on this JC. 🙂
