Not sure which forum to post this in.  I am sending email for my class reunion.  I found that some people were not getting email.  So, I tested by sending what I know was a bad email address and did not get a bounce notice.  I googled this and I think the reason is the way the email servers are configured.  But I am not sure and wanted to see if anyone has any experience with this.

    Thanks,
    Darrel

Setting your server to bounce unknown email just generates more traffic and lets the spammers know you are “open for business”. It’s easier to silently drop these messages, but not everyone does it.

Maybe try “return receipt” or “delivery status notification” .

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

Both of which can be turned off by the recipient.
Nothing guaranteed about mail delivery, but they do try.

        cheers, Paul

I must confess that I don’t follow this. When I send an email to a non-existing address, because I mistyped it, and either the domain is correct but not the intended recipient’s name, the “postmaster” there bounces it back to me with an error message, without delivering it, because it is undeliverable. Or if I mistyped the domain, my email client refuses to send it to a non-existing incoming server. Or if I typed the whole address correctly, but the address is no longer valid, the “postmaster” again returns it with an error message. In none of these three cases is anyone else the wiser, or else I am wrong about something here. Is the “postmaster” a person or a piece of software, like a daemon? I believe it is the latter.

I will try to explain.  I am sending email to an old list (ten years).  I am trying to figure out the addresses which are good and which are not. There are about 380 addresses.  I found that some of the adresses were not good but I was getting no indication they were not getting through (no bounce messages).  Some ISP’s did send a bounce message but the majority were not.  I was looking for a way to determine if the addresses were valid.

Yes!  Thank you very much.  I was able to test my email addresses there.  Funny note, the site flags people who mark emails as spam as “do not send”.  Since this is my class reunion email list I am not worried about being marked as a spammer, but I had 2 in my list that were marked as do not mail because they flag/report email as spam regularly.

I think I might get some mileage out of that especially because one of them is on the reunion committee!

        Thanks again,
        Darrel
