AskWoody LoungerDecember 6, 2018 at 2:25 am #238606Hello bellelyn,
Your Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB hard drive shows “Warning” for its SMART status.
I see the following:
— 226 reallocated sectors.
— 227 reallocation event counts.
— 512 sectors which are pending reallocation.
— 0 uncorrectable sectors.
— 0 UltraDMA errors. The zero UltraDMA errors indicates that there are not any issues with the data cables for this hard drive. I see that you have been using this drive for approximately 3.6 years, and that you have either powered off or rebooted your computer 278 times during the past 3.6 years.
The SMART data indicates that your external Western Digital 1TB My Passport drive also appears to be failing as well. Interestingly, the WD’s power on count and total power on time is the same as for the Toshiba hard drive.
The upshot is that both hard drives have been in use for only three and a half years. This should be the “sweet spot” in terms of the hard drive’s reliability. Yet for some reason both hard drives are failing. The question now becomes, why are both of these hard drives failing? Thus I ask the following questions…
— For the internal Toshiba drive, is it securely mounted within the computer? By this, I mean that the drive’s mounting is secured by screws, and not by any kind of plastic clip or any kind of removable plastic tray.
— For the external WD drive, I will assume that it is enclosed in some sort of plastic case. If so, does the case have any kind of vibration absorbing pads (feet or pads or cushions for the external case) in order to protect the hard drive from vibrations?
— Finally, do you play audio (television, music or games) through any kind of audio system and speakers which produces extremely loud audio? If so, you literally could be shaking your hard drives to death.
Best regards,
–GTP

AskWoody LoungerDecember 6, 2018 at 7:39 pm #238876Hello GoneToPlaid: Thank you for replying.

I have one of those All-in-one: computers – meaning the drive is somewhere inside the back of the monitor. I am disabled so I cannot get to the back of the monitor to see where the hard drive actually is. I’m sorry. I realize now that I prefer the monitor separate from the hard drive.
For the external WD drive, I will assume that it is enclosed in some sort of plastic case. If so, does the case have any kind of vibration absorbing pads (feet or pads or cushions for the external case) in order to protect the hard drive from vibrations?
The WD is in a hard case which I have plugged in to a 4 usb count on my computer desk. Unless I shake the table accidentally when I put my electric wheelchair under the desk for sitting, the WD does not get shaken, except maybe when I move it around for needed space on my desk. Finally, do you play audio (television, music or games) through any kind of audio system and speakers which produces extremely loud audio? If so, you literally could be shaking your hard drives to death.
I have a separate sound bar which is connected to my tv, but not to the computer unless you count the router which has my cable, amazon prime, blu ray disc player, but the sound bar is to the tv. I do not watch tv, play games, or listen to music on my computer. Sometimes I will llisten to a you tube instructional video, but not often.
In 2016 or 2017 I believe there was a power surge at the apartment I used to live at. I had to take my computer to a local computer guy in town, and it was in his hands for about a week. There after, I could not back up my operating system with macrium reflect. I do not know if the power surge (if that is what happened) is what messed up my computer.
I really do not like Windows 10, and I really can’t afford another computer right now, so I think I am up the creek without a paddle (as the old saying goes). I thought about a chrome book, but you cannot download anything to it (at least that’s what I have read).
Should I start saving fr a new computer? Sounds like I will have to get another one. I wanted to buy the Win 8.1 operating system again, but, can’t find it. Best Buy only sells win 10 now.
Thank you again for any insight. Bellelyn
Hopefully I got it right this time. PKCano: please delete the other two with the messed up text. Thank you.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 7, 2018 at 12:20 pm #238988Hi Paul:
Thank you for your input.“It is worth running the diags provided by the disk manufacturers. This will tell you if the disks are OK. It may also be worth doing the same thing in another computer to eliminate the MB / cables”.
I am not sure what you mean by this, “running diags provided by the disk manufactures”.
I only have the one computer.
Any more thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you. Bellelyn

Are you able to copy important files from your hard drive to a spare drive?
If your hard drive is failing, it’s important to get your important files copied to another disk. Even if you cannot recover from hard drive failure, you will have your important files.
