Iโ€™d like to see the contents of file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log, which contains the results of the most recent DISM command that you ran.

      1. Start Window Explorer. See here for how.

      2. Using Window Explorer, navigate to folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.

      Substeps:

2.1. Under Computer icon, click on “C:” volume.

      2.2. Double-click on Windows folder.

      2.3. Double-click on Logs folder

      2.4. Double-click on CBS folder.

      3. Double-click on file CheckSUR.log to open it in Notepad, a program that’s shipped with Windows 7.

      4. In Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select the entire contents of that file, then press Ctrl-C to copy the contents to the clipboard.

      5. In your web browser, go to site https://pastebin.com/.

      6. In the โ€œNew Pasteโ€ textbox, press Ctrl-V to paste contents.

      7. Press โ€œCreate New Pasteโ€ button.

      8. Tell me the URL (i.e. website address) that appears in the browserโ€™s address bar.

Mr.Brian:ย  It’s about 1:50 p.m. your time and it appears that you got started early.ย ย ย  I had a message started to you a few moments ago, and when I hit “something” (I thought it was “enter” ) the message was gone “poof”.ย ย  I hope that was only a fluke and won’t occur again.

I printed a copy of the directions as you listed them all, so I would have something in front of me when I began to “try” to follow the directions.ย  I’ll close this message before I get started so there shouldn’t be any distractions.ย ย  “Yes”, I do anticipate a few problems because I haven’t used the Word 2010 (and I think it’s kaput now), and have never used the Windows Explorer that I can recall ever since I’ve had a computer.ย ย  I will approach this with a positive attitude however and “hope for the best”.ย ย  I want to get this message sent before I have anymore “disappearing” problems.ย ย  Thank you for all of your hard work on thisย  (there is “something” that keeps popping up at the lower left side of the task bar, very rapidly so I can’t really see what it is).ย ย ย  Keeping my fingers crossed.ย ย  Thank you!ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

          Hello Walker,

I don’t want to get between you and the excellent help that MrBrian is giving you, but thought that your confusion regarding Windows Explorer could be cleared up.

Windows Explorer is your file manager in Win 7 (OS I think you said you are using). So it is simply what you are using to navigate anywhere in your computer… like air, almost invisible, and not noticable unless pointed out. When you go to and open a file, you used Windows Explorer. When you opened your Browser, you navigated to it, and used Windows Explorer. It is what displays your desktop icons, Start Menu, Task Bar, etc. When you click on Start, you use Windows Explorer.

So… when you were given directions to use Windows Explorer, it was how and where to navigate easily to the desired part of your system, not an additional program you needed to use. You were already using it!

Hope that clears up any confusion you might have about Windows Explorer.

Hello, Elly:ย ย  I see several messages from you, and have not had the time to study them all yet.ย  As you can see I have been totally “lost” in attempting to follow Mr.Brian’s excellent instructions.ย ย ย ย  I see that you have provided a lot of information to help me understand the Windows Explorer as well.ย ย  I have my fingers (and toes) crossed!!ย ย  Thank you so much for sending all of that to me, I sincerely appreciate it!!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I was not successful in opening the Win Explorer C Drive to show what I am supposed to be searching for:
        “Open a document
“tab”>Microsoft has made it easier to find your documents in Windows by creating a My Documents folder. Once in Explorer, you can open My Documents and double-click the document file to open the document.”
        <p class=

“tab”>I cannot “see” any “My Documents” folder.ย ย  I have attached a screenshot of what I am seeing when I open the Windows explorer.ย ย  Hope you will have time to check in here later and perhaps point me to the correct position (?).ย  Apologies – – – I knew I may have problems.ย ย  I’m so sorry about that.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™

Just helping you navigate… looking at your picture…

Skip PerfLogs, and navigate lower to Windows folder. Open it, and there is a Logs folder…

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I don’t know the reason, however I did not receive an e-mail alerting me to these last messages.ย ย ย  Wondered the reason, and I still do not know.ย ย  I did not receive an email notice for yours or Elly’s messages.

I hope that will correct itself (or perhaps I did not mark it to “notify me”).ย ย ย  I will have to take the time to try to absorb what has been written now.ย  I’m still not sure I understand it all, however I am going to “try”.ย ย  Thank you once again for setting up this new Topic, and all of the information you have provided.ย ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

@Mr.Brian:ย  I noted the information you have posted.ย ย ย  My question isย  the reference to yourย  message:

            “I didnโ€™t mention the โ€œMy Documentsโ€ folder. Please go to step 2.2.”

What does this mean exactly?ย ย  Right now I have “Double-click on Windows folder” next to the 2.2.ย ย ย ย ย  Can you please clarify that for me? ย  (yes, I know I’m as dense as they get).ย  Thank you once again for the instructions you are providing.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian:ย ย  In “Step 2”, I have been unable to get to:

“2.ย  Using Windows Explorer, navigate to folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS”

            *************************************************************

I do not have anything labeled like that.ย ย  Please look at the screenshot I sent yesterday, and it will show what is listed on the Win Explorer list”?ย  That folder referenced above is just “not there” in the list insofar as I can see.ย ย ย ย  I cannot proceed with the other directions until I can get past this step, and I still have the problem where you changedย ย  “Step 2.2”ย  (??).

I will try to check back before 2:00 p.m. your time.ย ย ย  I am anxious to start this process, however I am unable to get past these issues.ย ย  Thank you once again.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello Walker. At the bottom left of your Window Explorer window, the last three folders are “scratch”, “Users”, and “Windows”. Double click on the Windows folder.

From there you can double click on the Logs folder, then the CBS log…

If you want email notices of new messages for this topic, you’ll need to subscribe to this topic.

Please ignore “Using Windows Explorer, navigate to folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS” because that’s what the substeps do. In step 2.2, double-click on the “Windows” folder that appears in the right pane of your screenshot.

Mr.Brian:ย  Everything was going well until I got to the “CheckSur”, and had it ready to paste into the link you provided.ย ย  Well, when I navigated to that link using the browser it took me to a site that stated “You cannot create a new “empty wastebin”.ย ย  I am attaching a screenshot of that one, as well as a screen shot of the “Check SUR Log”.

            Where should I “go” from here?ย ย  I don’t know if starting over would help.ย ย  Please advise.ย ย  I was afraid I would have problems, and I did unfortunately.ย ย ย  I hope I will hear from you SOON.ย ย  It’s onlyo about 8:37 a.m. your time.ย ย ย  :((

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I have been working for quite some time, trying to sort out the messages I’ve received, and printed these out so I could keep them separate.ย ย ย  I only hope I can work for a while longer.ย ย  Then if possible even come back later.ย  I have a few things which must be done, however I would like to work on the instructions you provided, to determine if I will be successful or not.ย  I FINALLY understand what you changed with the following statement about:

Ignore:ย  “Using Windows Eplorer, navigate to folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS”

Hopefully I will make some progress now.ย  If I have any more questions I will send a message.

Now that I have all of these different messages sorted out that should help. ย ย  If I can come back later with some “news” on the situation I will do so.ย ย  I’ve gained a top notch headache, however at least I have the information organized and hope and pray that everything will be functional.ย ย  Thank you again for your guidance.ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Your last screenshot provided me with what I needed to know (it’s good news!), so you don’t need to do the remaining steps anymore :).

      Let’s now try this:

      1. Open an elevated command prompt.

      2. In the elevated command prompt, type this command:

      sfc /scannow

and then press Enter key and wait for about 30 minutes (or until itโ€™s finished).

      3. Attach screenshot that includes the command prompt.

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I found MY error, and now I know “how to do that” (I think).ย ย  However if you have the information you needed from the screenshot that is WONDERFUL.ย  I see the new directions about doing the command prompt, and will begin that as quickly as possible.

I’m SO glad that you saw my last message!ย ย  I will try to get that done as soon as possible.ย  Thank you once again!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian:ย ย  All went well, and I am attaching the screenshot from this command prompt.ย ย  Hope that it will provide the information that you need.ย ย  Thank you once again for your excellent guidance and help!ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

P.S.ย ย ย  The copy is still on the “pastebin” website.ย ย  Can I get it off of there??

1 user thanked author for this post.
        • #142335

          Excellent :).

You can close the pastebin website and command prompt now if you want to.

          Next thing to do:

          1. In Windows Update, click “check for updates” and wait until it’s finished.

          2. Tell me or give me a screenshot showing which updates you have hidden.

1 user thanked author for this post.
          • #142338

Mr.Brian:ย  So glad that it turned out well!ย ย  The question I asked about getting that pasted message into the Note Pad thing.ย ย  Just wondered if it contained any kind of “security information” (yes, I’m paranoid too on top of everything else).

I will run the updates, and I’m sure there are not too many hidden, however can’t recall exactly how many.ย ย  There are about 24 which were unhidden and those are all unchecked.

UPDATE”ย ย ย ย  Just noted that, of course, I uncheck all of those IMPORTANT updates when I do the “check for updates”.

Only 3 “Important” updates, all checked, and 2 of those are “ancient”ย  (going back to 2014 & 2016).ย  The other one I think is a .NET Framework rollup (KB4041083ย  pub. 9/12/17).ย  From everything I’ve seen posted, I think I’ll just “wait” along with a lot of others on the .NET Framework (it looks like a “mess”).ย ย ย  Thank you again!ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian:ย ย  Thank you for the “all clear” information!

Attaching the list of “Hidden Updates”ย  as requested and hope it will be of some help too.ย ย  I’ll try to check back here, however it will be later this afternoon (just in case there is a message from you). ย  ย ย  Thank you again!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian: Good thing I checked back here before logging out.ย ย ย  I did install one Important Update”, and that was only the update to the WD.

Now I will return and get copies of the Important and Optional Tabs, so that should cover everything.ย ย  Since I unhid so many, there are 24 I think in the Optionals, and a lot which are “older” because of all of the unhiding.ย ย ย  I will try to be back here quickly with the attachments.

Okay, I have them now, there will be 3 attachments, because there were too many for one document on the Optionals.ย ย  The other attachment is for the Important ones pending.ย ย  As I mentioned, I try to will to check back later, if possible, to see if there may be another msg. from you.ย ย  HAPPY HALLOWEEN!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I don’t have much time, and I am “leery” that if there are any problems with these updates, BECAUSE IT’S THE “END OF THE MONTH”, there may be problems with NEW updates getting mixed with these.

What do you think?ย  I hope you can get a REPLY back to me soon, as I am running very short on time right now.ย ย  Hope you can get a REPLY back to me quickly, Please??

The next Patch Tuesday is November 14.

            • #142398

Mr.Brian: Does that mean that I’m “safe” to go ahead and install what you have recommended without being concerned about any “new” updates MS may be throwing out? To be honest, I’ve had such a miserable time with the updates, I’ve lost my list of the way “things were”.ย  MS has changed so much and I was in such a mess, I couldn’t keep up with it all.

              ****************************************************

I note your messages and the one above this one cites the following instructions:

              1. I recommend to install all 3 of the updates in the Important tab.

              2. Reboot computer.

              3. โ€œCheck for updatesโ€ again and post a screenshot of Important tab updates if there are any.

              *********************************************************

With your last message below this one you refer to:

Since youโ€™re in Group A, I recommend to do the following next:

              1. Tick Windows Update setting โ€œGive me recommended updates the same way I receive important updatesโ€.

              2. List or give screenshots of the updates that are available in both the Important and Optional tabs.

              *****************************************

Being the “dense person” I am, I’m not certain what you want me to do first (??).ย  I am assuming you want me to follow BOTH messages in the sequence they have been sent – – – Is that correct?ย ย ย  My apologies as always for not understanding “exactly” what I should do.ย ย  If everything is in the “clear” for now because of no new updates I don’t have any anxiety.ย  Do you want me to just follow the “FIRST” message, OR do you want me to follow BOTH of them.ย ย  I got back here as quickly as I could, and apologize it couldn’t have been sooner.

This following statement that you wanted me to “do”:

โ€œGive me recommended updates the same way I receive important updatesโ€.

I have NEVER done that before because I didn’t know that it was “safe”.ย ย  However if you are now recommending it, I assume that it is “safe”??

I will be checking back as often as possible so I don’t miss any of your communications.ย  Thank you, as always, Mr.Brian.ย ย ย  You are appreciated more than you willย  ever know.ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

      4. “Check for updates”

      5. List or give screenshots of the updates that are available in both the Important and Optional tabs.

Mr.Brian:ย  Thank goodness you’ve returned!ย ย  I think I can follow these directions as you now have them set forth.ย ย ย  I understand that the ONLY updates you want me to install are the Important (3) pending in the Important Updates now.ย ย ย ย  Then reboot.

Then you want me to update setting โ€œGive me recommended updates the same way I receive important updatesโ€.ย ย  Then do a “check for updates”

Then take screenshots of what is now showing in the Important and the Optional Updates.ย  The take the screenshots they appear now,ย  however NOT installing any of them.ย  I will wait about 10 minutes before I start this process, and hope that I have it “straight”.ย ย  Thank you once again, Mr.Brian.ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

It now appears that these fixes are not included in the .NET Framework October 2017 monthly rollups but instead might be included in the October 2017 .NET Framework preview monthly rollups.

The last message I see about this update from you states:

Edit: My earlier post may have been correct.

        ************************************************************

I’m totally in the dark here, Mr.Brian.ย  I am editing this message to state that I can wait about 15 minutes, however if I don’t hear from you, I think you still want me to install this update?ย ย ย  I don’t want to assume “anything”, however I trust your judgement, and if you feel that it’s “safe”, then I will install it.ย ย  I never doubt your instructions, and will proceed as you have set forth and verified.ย ย  Thank you once again, Mr.Brian@ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

You can skip the Sept 2017 .NET Framework rollup if you want (I installed it in September) because we’ll install the Oct 2017 .NET Framework rollup later, which fixes those issues.

DO NOT OPEN THESE ATTACHMENTS….. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM!!

Mr.Brian:ย  I am attaching screen shots for the “Important”ย  (takes 2 shots because it’s too long for one), and the Optional Updates.ย  The optionals went down to almost zero, and the Important ones went “up to the moon”ย  Very interesting.ย  The Important have 2 labels, the 2nd one shows “2”, and the first one doesn’t.ย  The Optionals are so few that one screenshot was sufficient.ย ย  If anything doesn’t come through, please let me know.ย  BTW, the computer asked forย  a “restart” itself, so I didn’t think it needed “another one”.

I was surprised that the Sept. .NET Framework update was no longer in there.ย  The screenshots are attached (should be 3 of them).ย ย  Thank you once again for all of your outstanding help and guidance!!ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

@Mr.Brian:ย ย  WARNING, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE ATTACHMENTS!!!!

I WILL TRY TO CONTACT WOODY TO LET HIM KNOW SO HE CAN WARN YOU THRU AN E-MAIL.ย ย  DON’T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.ย ย ย  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU RECEIVE THIS MESSAGE??

      • #142452

@walker – could you please explain the problem you experienced?
Did you try to insert the content into your reply?
Did you try to select a file that was other than an image file?
        More information would be helpful.

@Kirsty:ย ย ย  These were just “normal” screenshots (which are done through Paint).ย  I’ve sent 100’s of them through the years, however never seen anything like this.ย ย  It’s as if THEY ARE “ACTIVE”.ย ย ย ย  I sent an e-mail to Woody, however don’t know if he received it.ย ย ย ย  I just feel “sick”.

            Screenshot-test

            • #142460

I’m not seeing any behaviour that is different to normal… everything seemed to work without anything unusual.

1 user thanked author for this post.
            • #142461

@Kirsty:ย  Your “test” just cameย  up to open in the usual “windows menu”, which this is not the “normal” way they open.ย  They are just an attachment made by copying it into Paint, and making it an attachment on your desktop.ย  When you want to send it you just add it as an “attachment” and choose it from the desktop where it goes into the message.

            • #142463

Sorry, I’m not following your wording @walker.

I clicked select file, and selected the saved image file, then I clicked on Insert content, which pasted the image into the reply I created. If you have images showing on your browser, you should see the image. If you have images disabled, you should see the inserted content as a hyperlinked filename.

I am using the Text version of the input box to do this (as I find it works better).

How are you using it, and how does that differ from previous usage experience?

            • #142467

@Kirsty:ย  I went back to older attachments and they are ALL like this.ย ย  You see a “hand” moving that you can click.ย ย ย  When I add an attachment to these messages, I select the annotation that says “select file” which is below the word “attachments”, and that puts it right below the message you are sending.ย ย  This is the way it’s always worked.ย

There is something definitely WRONG.ย ย  I went back to older messages that had similar attachments and they are the SAME way.ย ย  I just don’t understand it at all.ย ย  I hope that Woody receives my e-mail.ย ย ย

              I would try to send a graphic attachment now, however I guess I could try sending it to myself???ย ย  I don’t know what to do.ย ย ย ย ย

            • #142472

You see a โ€œhandโ€ moving that you can click.

I’m not seeing this… what browser (and version) are you using?

            • #142462

@Kirsty:ย ย  Well, your “test” didn’t really come up as “anything” other than a copy of what you had written.ย ย  Very, very strange.ย  I don’t understand it at all.ย ย  I hope that Woody or Mr.Brian understands this.ย ย ย  I can try sending an innocuous attachment in this, just a “graphic”, and see how it goes through, however I am so afraid now I don’t know what to do.ย ย ย ย

            • #142464

My screenshot was of the message, so that doesn’t seem to be a problem.ย  I’m testing the Visual input box option now, with a partial copy of your last msg:

              ScreenshotB
That was using the Select file at the bottom of the text box, followed by Insert into content.
Are you using the Image button on the top of the Visual input box instead?

            • #142470

@Kirsty:ย ย  No, I’ve never sent attachments on this website any differently than I doย  now.ย  Just look below and see where it says “attachments”, and then look “lower”ย  down a ways and you will seeย  “select file”.ย  I just click on select file, and then find it on the desk top and double click on it and it goes as an attachment to the message.ย  I’ve been a member of this forum for quite a few years and never had any problems EVER until now.ย ย ย  I may try to do a test message to myself, however it will probably be the same since it appears that even the older messages are doing this.ย  I just don’t know.ย ย

            • #142506

@Kirsty:ย  There is only one other “possibility” and that is that occasionally I’ve hit the “wrong key” and some sort of pop-up with a lot of writing/options comes up below the message I am writing.ย ย  In the past I’ve just always clicked on it and it disappears.ย ย  I am thinking I should have read it for “whatever options” it was referring to.

You as well as Mr.Brian probably know what I am referring to.ย  I just deleted it using the “X” that was on it.ย ย  I hope that you or Mr.Brian will know to what I’m referring.ย ย  I know there was dialog there, and wish I could duplicate my error so that it would pop-up again.

              This is a Halloween I will never forget.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™

Thank you so much for trying to help, Kirsty.ย ย  It helps just knowing that others are trying to help.ย  I don’t think changing my “Updates” made any difference, and I don’t think it is related, it’s the “attachment itself”.ย ย  I’m praying hard that the reason will be found – – – I’m sure it’s not anything serious, more of a worry than anything else.ย  Thank you once again!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

@Kirsty:ย  I apologize for forgetting you had asked about the browser I use, and it’s Firefox, which I’ve never had any problems with.ย ย  I am highly suspicious of the “little dialog box” that pops up occasionally (underneath the message you’re typing), and it has various dialogs in it.ย  I’ve always just clicked the “X” in the upper corner because I didn’t know what it was.

I’m just very, very weary, and glad that no one else was affected adversely by the attachments. Thank you for your moral support.ย ย  I really, really needed that!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

    • #142453

Mr.Brian, these attachments are “active” so they could be configured in any manner.ย  HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS, AND I HOPE AND PRAY THAT WOODY CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.ย ย  I HAVE DELETED THEM ALL FROM MY DESKTOP, BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN THEY ARE “GONE”.ย ย ย  PLEASE REPLY IF YOU RECEIVE THIS MESSAGE???

      • #142473

I don’t see anything unusual about your attachments. They behave exactly like attachments always have.

If you aren’t logged in to the site, you can’t see any attachments.

Please take a deep breath, relax, and explain your problem. Error code 80070308 is pretty common.

        • #142488

@Woody:ย ย  I just sent you an e-mail trying to explain how these attachments are appearing to me.ย  It’s not an error code.ย  I’ve never seen any screenprint attachment ever do anything like this.ย ย  I don’t know what it is.ย ย  The attachment actually has the “little hand” on it that you see when you are ready to click on a file, or link, etc.ย  I have no clue as to what happened, however it is definitely something.

I got the screenshots from copies I made of parts of the updates, and it’s possible that this could be part of the problem.ย ย

I was asked to “add”ย  “Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updatesโ€.ย  This was the only change there was to the Windows Updates.ย ย ย  I will keep you apprised of the situation, if I can get a handle on it. Thank you so much for the reply.

        • #142499

@Woody:ย  It appears that I won’t be able to send anymore attachments (at least from this Topic) because these attachments not only have the “little hand”, they also have a very small magnifying glass that has aย ย ย ย  +ย ย  sign on it as well.ย  This is “movable”, and so is the “little hand”.ย ย  I have changed my updates setting, however I won’t be able to use this Forumย  with any attachments the way it appears.ย

I hope someday to be able to find the reason for this behavior.ย  It appears to only affect my messages, and I hope that it doesn’t continue to affect all of the other “topics”.ย  I wonder what the “answer” is.ย ย ย  Thank you for taking note of this issue.ย ย  It is appreciated.

    • #142513

@Mr.Brian:ย  Apologies for all of the “uproar” over the attachments I sent causing huge problems ย  However it appears to be ONLY ME.ย ย  I don’t know what occurred however the attachments (mine) have a “moving hand and a moving magnifying glass” that are actually on the attachment.ย ย ย  I was so anxious that this was something that anyone opening the attachments would be affected by them.ย ย  Therefore I attempted to warn Woody, and you both.

Attaching a copy of a very small “dialog box” which I referred to.

I hope that you receive this message and that you may have some idea of what could have caused this.ย ย  I have noted that when I’ve hit a “wrong key of some kind” when typing a message in the forums, there is some kind of dialog box that opens underneath the message, I’ve just been hitting the “X” to close it and never read it, however that is a possibility.ย  I just don’t know.ย ย  I hope that this will not completely crush everything you’ve been so successful at.ย  I feel “literally” sick.ย ย ย  I simply do not possess enough knowledge or expertise to even know where or how to begin trying to find the cause/reason for this.ย ย  Thank you once again, Mr.Brian for all of your invaluable, wonderful, and amazing help, ALWAYS.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

The window in the bottom of your screenshot opens when you press a certain key combination in Firefox. There is nothing wrong with the attachments :).

Has he by any change turned on the magnifier? Windows key + Esc should turn it off?

I thought walker was referring to the window with “Inspector Console” etc. near the top. That window has an X in its upper right corner to close it. Or do you think walker meant something else?

because these attachments not only have the โ€œlittle handโ€, they also have a very small magnifying glass that has a + sign on it as well. This is โ€œmovableโ€, and so is the โ€œlittle handโ€.

Sounds like the magnifier to me.

@PKCano:ย ย ย  Thank you so much for the information about the possibility that I turned on the magnifier?

Windows key + Esc should turn it off?

I had no idea that there was such a function, however I will try it tomorrow when I’m feeling better.ย ย  Your help is always deeply appreciated, and all users are benefited greatly by the information and advice you provide to us all.ย  Thank you once again!ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

        • #142529

Mr.Brian:ย  Thank goodness you are back with us.ย ย  I was so upset because I thought there is “something wrong” with the attachments.ย ย  I still do not know what is wrong with my attachments, however thought it could be the “dialog box” that pops up at the bottom of a message when I hit aย  “wrong key”.ย  I’ve just ignored that box and there is an “X” which I’ve used to just close it.ย  I had no idea that Firefox had the capability to make those kinds of changes, and what PKCano is referring to is completely “unknown” to me.ย ย  I must thank him/her for that information.ย ย  I am so relieved that those attachments did no harm to anyone other than me.ย ย ย ย  Thank you so much, Mr.Brian, for your messages.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

        • #143066

Mr.Brian:ย  When I move to the attachments, they have the “hand” on them (same as they are on a link).ย  The attachments have NEVER before had this “hand” on them. ย  I normally double-click on the attachment and it opens.ย ย  (Normally without any “hand” or “magnifying glass” with a + {or -} on it.ย  The way these attachments are now, this is all I can “do”.

Apparently I can’t change the strange behavior and am not aware of anything that Firefox could have done with them.ย  The new screenshots I am taking do not have this problem, however I did use the “fix” that PKCano referenced and that seems to have stopped this weird behavior.ย  I’ve never had any problems with “screen shots” before now.

I will have to mark it down to a “new” learning curve, however I would be very interested in any information about FF which would allude to this weird behavior.ย ย  Thank you for any more information you may be able to find on this.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

I recommend to untick the first 3 updates in the Important tab (the “.NET Framework” updates) in your screenshot (we’ll do those later), leave everything else as is, and then install the 17 ticked updates.

I might not be around here much today, but here is what you can do:

      1. Click “Check for updates”. Untick the first 3 updates in the Important tab (the โ€œ.NET Frameworkโ€ updates) of your screenshot, leave everything else as is, and then install the 17 ticked updates.

      2. Reboot.

      3. Click “Check for updates”. Hide KB3021917.

      4. Untick every update except “Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7”. Tick “Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7” if it’s not already ticked.

      5. Install the 1 ticked update.

      6. Reboot.

      7. Click “Check for updates”. Install 2010-10 .NET Framework monthly rollup (and nothing else).

      8. Reboot.

      9. Click “Check for updates”. Wait until finished.

      10. Post screenshot of Important tab.

Mr.Brian:ย  I will make a copy of the instructions, and try to follow them “to the letter”, hoping that I will not encounter any problems.ย ย  I do see ONE unchecked in the IMPORTANT files.ย  That’s KB3102429, 1/11/16 (18 MB).ย ย  Since it’s unchecked I wouldn’t be changing it.

I hope that everything will be all right.ย  I think that PKCano had the right idea about the attachments and using the Win Key and ESC, however it will not change those which I already posted on this site (apparently).

As I try to work on the latest instructions, I know it is going to be very slow going for me as I want to ensure that I do not deviate and make any errors.ย ย  I see you will be very busy today, and I will only report the progress on carrying out the instructions.ย ย  Thank you very, very much for your “absolutely” invaluable help, there is “no substitute” for the knowledge and expertise which you possess!ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

        Mr.Brian:ย ย  I have gotten to STEP 3:

I’ve DL & installed the 17 Important updates as you directed.ย ย  Computer did the “restart” and all appears to be okay, NOW HOWEVER, I need some guidance with the following step PLEASE:

I am now at “Step 4”.

I did the “Check for updates” and hid the KB3021917.ย  The 3 updates for the .NET Framework are there, all checked, however I unchecked them all for now.ย  It appears that the ONLY one I see that references BOTH MS and .NET Framework 4.7ย ย  isย  KB3186497 (dated 6/27/17),ย  47.5 MB.ย ย ย ย  I just need to verify that this is the correct one to install.ย  I will wait for a while hoping that you will be back here so I can verify this.ย

Everything, thus far seems to be going in accordance with your instructions.ย ย  Only wish to verify .NET Framework update, and I think it’s the one I cited above.ย ย ย  I would rather “wait” and verify rather than to DL & install the wrong one. ย ย ย  Thank you for your help, guidance and verification with this one.ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

        • #143084

KB3186497 is indeed the next update to install.

          • #143087

Mr.Brian:ย ย ย  Thank you SO much for this verification!ย ย  Now I can move ahead with the process.ย ย  I am so grateful for your help.

I did note that there may be a “typo”ย  in Step 7 as follows:ย ย ย  It shows 2010-10, however I think it should be 2017-10ย ย  (?).ย  Every time I try to go back to one of those wonky attachments in this topic, I get disconnected, however I think that this one is just a typo, so hopefully I can catch you again to ask this question….. making good progress, and I will check back to see if you have seen this question.ย  This is the “rollup”, and not the PREVIEW, I’m sure.

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I did the “restart” on the computer after I installed the KB3186497 MS .Net Framework update because it did not have its usual “restart now” showing.ย  Well, I did the “restart” as it is supposed to be done from the computer, however the computer did not do its usual gymnastics, so I waited about 2 minutes and did it again.ย ย  It did not respond again.

So the only thing I can do is to move forward with the instructions.ย ย  I don’t know what else to do unless there is another “option”.ย ย  I will try to wait about 10 minutes to see if you may be back again.

I don’t think there is anything else I can do at this point in time other than to move forward with the next instruction (Step 7).

I know you can’t be at the computer every minute….. sometimes it’s like”we don’t have a life of our own anymore”.ย ย  Thank you if you can provide any other avenue to pursue in this instance, please?ย ย  I hope I’m not “doing wrong” by forging ahead, however there is only one more step to go.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

            • #143100

Mr. Brian:ย ย  After I installed the MS .NET Framework 4.7 update, there was no little “restart now” box, so I did the “restart” as we are supposed to do .ย ย ย  There was “NO” restart such as we know it.ย ย  I waited a few minutes and did the “restart” once again, and again there was no actual “restart” as we know it.

I am now at Step 7, and since I don’t know what else to do, I would like to go forward, however I would like to obtain your thoughts about this situation.ย ย ย  I have rebooted twice, using the computer, without any degree of success.ย ย  I will try to wait a while until I can see if you may be able to return once again.ย ย ย  Sometimes we feel as if we don’t have a “life of our own” when things such as this occur.ย ย ย ย ย  I hate to bother you again, however I don’t know what else to do.ย ย ย  I hope I can “find” you and that you can provide the guidance I need in this situation.ย ย  We are SO close to the last step now, I will try to “WAIT” until I see a reply from you.ย ย ย  I was thinking about trying to move forward, however do not want to do any “harm” to what we have already accomplished.ย ย ย  Thank you once again, Mr.Brian.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™

When you tried to restart the computer, did it actually restart or not? If it did not, then click the “Shut down” button on the Start menu, wait for about 20 seconds, and then turn your computer back on.

Mr. Brian:ย ย  Yes, the computer did restart, however NOT in the “normal” manner.ย ย ย  The screen went black, however none of the normal dialog was there.ย ย ย ย  I did do the “restart” once again as well, and since then it has been just “shutdown” normally.

Did this impair the function of the “restart” process?ย ย  The computer did not show the usual “WAIT, DO NOT SHUT THE COMPUTER DOWN, ETC.”.ย ย ย  What in the world can I do now?ย ย  If I do the “shutdown” as you have directed above, will that be sufficient???

I am worried “sick” because I don’t know what to do.ย ย ย  Iย  have not had anything to eat yet, however I will leave the computer on. ย  ย ย  I hope you can PLEASE, PLEASE send me a reply so I will know what to do?????ย ย ย  :((

Let’s see what happens if you click on the “Shut down” button, wait 20 seconds, and restart your computer.

            • #143199

Mr.Brian:ย  Do you want me to HOLD the BUTTON (on the tower) down for 20 seconds, or just click on it and then wait 20 seconds?ย  When you say “shutdown button” you could be referring to the one on the computer screen or the “tower”.ย ย  Sorry I am SO dense.ย ย  I just don’t know anything about these things.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™

PLEASE DISREGARD THIS MESSAGE AND SEE LATEST MESSAGE.ย  THANK YOU.

Mr.Brian:ย ย  My apology once again – – – I see you are referring to the button on the menu

( click the โ€œShut downโ€ button on the Start menu, wait for about 20 seconds, and then turn your computer back on.).ย  I missed that – – – – – I am so sorry.ย  I’ve been up since 5:00 a.m. and apologize for being so tired.ย ย  ๐Ÿ™ย  I think I have it now.ย ย  Thank you for your patience.

            • #143204

Mr.Brian:ย  I understand that this is the action that you wish me to take now.ย ย  I hope I am correct as I will try that now, as you have instructed me.ย ย  I can’t apologize enough for being so tired I can’t “think straight”.ย ย  I will proceed and hope and pray for the best.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

            • #143206

Mr.Brian:ย  The computer shut down, and I waited 20 seconds before starting it up again.ย  It had the “normal” way of coming up, and the only dialog I saw was “Please Wait”, however that is all there was, and it continued to boot up as it normally does.ย ย  I don’t know what this “means”.ย ย ย  Does this mean that now I can continue with Step 7?

This is the “last step”, and if this is what I should do next I think it would be best if I waited until tomorrow considering my extreme fatigue.ย ย ย  I do hope that it will be all right with the “restart issue”.ย ย ย  Everything appears the same as it did earlier in the day (I don’t recall the “Please Wait” thing, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.

I will try to check back later if possible.ย ย  I feel very embarrassed about my problems understanding what you so clearly stated to me.ย ย  Thank you so very, very much for your help, and patience.ย ย ย  You are “one in a million”, Mr.Brian!!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian:ย  Insofar as the computer shutting down when I used the “restart”, all I can recall is that the screen went black for a short time, then the “normal” icons (MS) appeared (moving as they d0) and everything was in its proper place on the desktop.ย ย ย  I did not expect anything like that, however it “seems” to me that this “was” a “restart since the screen did go black, and then the MS icons were there as they usually are.

I will begin Step 7, and hope that everything will be all right from this point forward.ย  My unfamiliarity with computers leaves me very vulnerable to “anything which is different” that I am “unaware of”.ย ย ย  I will move ahead and hope and pray that all will be well.ย ย  Thank you again for your outstanding help, Mr.Brian.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian:ย ย  SUCCESS!ย  Before I forget, this last update did not have the “automatic window” for the “restart” either, so I used the one in the “menu” as I did previously.ย ย  I noted this time that it DID SAY:ย ย  “SHUTTING DOWN”, then the black screen for a short time, and then the “Starting Windows”, so this is apparently what it did yesterday, and it WAS shutting down, however in a different manner.

The last update is now installed, and I have attached some screenshots.ย  There are no more “Important Updates” in the list.

***Now a question:ย  Should the PREVIEW for a .Net Framework be hidden, or just leave it where it is now?ย ย  It is KB4042076, and dated 10/17/17.

Mr.Brian:ย ย ย  The attachments are the same wonky way they were as the others that I sent.ย ย  This is the only website that shows them like this.ย ย  It never did it before.ย ย  Do I have something “checked” in here that is causing this?ย ย  These have the little “moving hand” and the “magnifying glass with the + or –ย  sign.ย ย  On my desk top these work just fine with the Windows Photo Viewer and do not have any of these “symptoms”.ย ย  I would like to get rid of this behavior on this website, however I not know how to do that.ย ย  If I even open one of these “wonky” attachments it doesn’t allow me to go back to the message (website) and I have to log in again.ย  I have no idea how this could have occurred.ย ย  When I did the exercise that PKCano mentioned, I checked and everything on my computer is “normal”.ย  Some of those I have on the desktop (for e-mails) are all different varieties (e.g.ย ย  “gif”, jpeg, etc.).

Any guesses would help because I don’t know what to do to make these attachments as they are when I “select” them for this website.ย ย  Never any problems until now, and I’ve been a member for quite a few years. ย ย  Thank you once again for your fantastic help, Mr.Brian.ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s great, and you are welcome!

      A couple of notes:

      1. If you see KB2952664 in Windows Update in the future, I recommend to hide it.

      2. Nothing in the Optional tab is ticked by default, so you don’t need to hide anything in the Optional tab for that particular reason.

      I recommend:

      1. Click “Check for updates”, wait until it’s done, and then post screenshot of your hidden updates.

      2. Learn about System Restore if you don’t know about it already. I recommend that you manually create a system restore point and call it something like “Updates functioning properly”.

Mr.Brian, I understand and appreciate you looking at this dilemma.ย  I have almost arrived at the conclusion that I “think” that Firefox has something to do with this because there is a “new” icon in the upper R. corner of the “Tool Bar” on the top line of the computer with other icons.

It was not there until just recently (perhaps a week or so), so I am highly suspicious of this because when I highlight it, it shows “Firefox Screenshots.ย ย  Will let you know if I can find any information about this as it’s completely foreign to me.ย ย  Thank you once again for an unforgettable experience for me;ย  and providing so much new information and SOLVING the problem that this Topic was created for!ย ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

As a test, I tried to induce error 80070308 by adding the PendingRequired registry value to a Windows 7 x64 virtual machine that actually had no pending Windows update actions. I succeeded, as the next attempt to install updates in Windows Update resulted in error 80070308!

Mr.Brian:ย ย ย  Thank you so much for posting the details about your “test” with the “error 80070308” .ย  I don’t know what a “virtual machine” is although I’ve seen it referred to numerous times.ย ย ย  Congratulations on the successful “test”.

It was very obvious to me what caused my problem, however I had no clue on how to extricate myself from that situation and went for several months without any updating.ย ย  The fact that “nothing” has been done to solve this problem which literally shuts down the updates is very frustrating.ย ย  Thank you so much for undertaking the “test”, and that it was successful!

More testing has revealed that the manually-added PendingRequired registry value is not cleared after a reboot after installing updates that really do require a reboot.

I have been not seen any circumstances in which registry value PendingRequired is set by Windows when I install updates via either Windows Update or via .MSU file. However, given walker’s update issues, we know that there are circumstances in which this happens. The only reference I have found for PendingRequired is Whatโ€™s New in Windows Servicing: Service Stack Improvements: Part 3.

    • #143808

Well, I had a message started to send, and then must have “hit a wrong key” and it disappeared!ย  I was not “logged out” either, so don’t know what the problem was.

I don’t know “what” the PendingRequired registry is so I’m “lost” with that one (my usual “mode”).ย  I just know that this is something that has been out there for quite some time, and no action has been taken by those who “engineered” this function to correct it.ย ย  We are definitely NOT in the “driver’s seat”.

I did check my computer, and took a screenshot which revealed that there NEVER was a “Restore Point” set up when I had this computer “built”.ย  I will be re-reading the instructions I have from the 2 links you provided and when I “think” I understand the basics I will send you a msg.

The screenshot I took is actually “normal”, however I’m sure that this screenshot problem is a FF issue as it’s listed on a website how to “get rid of it”, and I am very angry that they have done this.ย ย  Waaaaaaaaay back a few years ago, I lost a ton of my files because they were arbitrarily changed.

Will try to get back here sometime this afternoon after I’ve had time to read more about the System Restore.ย ย  Thank you again for sending the links I need which provide the information.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

I can see you got started early!ย ย  I’m later than usual.ย ย ย  I don’t know where you got the information onย  getting rid of the FF “screenshots”, however here is a link they have on their website:

              https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-screenshots#w_how-do-i-disable-screenshots

I wonder why they have two recommendations cited instead of only one. ย  I only found one and it was “right on” about people not wanting this “feature” (I’m being euphemistic when I use that term – –ย  ๐Ÿ™ย ย  Do you think that one is preferable to the other?ย ย  I have put that project on the back burner until I can get started with the “System Restore” objective.

I have two references you send me links to, and I was citing what was on those when I sent the message above.ย ย  One isย  about “What is System Restore:ย ย  Link as follows:

              https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-use-system-restore-in-windows-2626131

I haveย  accumulated so much “paper” that I must take a time-out to find the most important messages I’ve printed out.ย  Everything moved so rapidly when you were winding up the “Topic” problem that what I had printed out has become voluminous.

Now, a question, please – – – – which of these two documents should I place the emphasis on?ย  That last link has a “message from Google”ย ย ย  “Ad Closed By Google”.ย ย  This is somewhat confusing because I don’t know what that means.

Now, I will once again read both documents, and try to get rid of excess paper.ย ย  Thank you for guiding me in the right direction so that I can actually set up the “System Restore” on this computer so it is functional.ย ย  Thank you once again for the information, and your guidance.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

That simply means that Google may have detected the ad was not following Google’s guidelines for how an ad should perform on a page. It can also mean that Google has received many complaints about the ad or its placement, so they have decided to remove it for the time being.

@Bob99:ย  I was in the midst of sending you a message when the mouse went “dead”, but the computer was on.ย ย ย ย  So had to do aย  hard shutdown to get things started again.ย  Second time this has occurred and don’t know what to make of it.ย ย ย ย ย  I did run a “computer security scan” but came up empty, so I don’t know what’s causing this unless my “mouse” is going out.

What I wanted to comment on is the fact that normally I only use FF as the browser, not the other one, however I won’t even hazard a guess what it means.ย  Thankย  you for your take on its significance!ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

“Now, a question, please โ€“ โ€“ โ€“ โ€“ which of these two documents should I place the emphasis on?”

Neither. As far as actions to do, the link I mentioned earlier today is the one you should do now.

I removed Firefox Screenshots icon by clicking Customize on the Firefox menu…

@walker-Just how to do that you may ask? Here’s another way besides the one in your post above this one:

At the top of the Firefox window, over on the right side immediately to the right of the “Search” box, there’s an icon that looks like three heavy black lines stacked on top of each other.

Click that icon once and you’ll see a new “box” open up. All the way at the bottom of that box is the word “Customize” with a plus (+) symbol next to it. Click on that word, and it will turn green and the rest of the Firefox screen will look a little different as well.

Now, with your LEFT mouse button, click on top of the Screenshots icon (the one with the scissors and bluish color) and hold that click. In other words, press the left mouse button down and don’t let go. Your mouse pointer will not look like an arrow, it will look like a hand that has grasped an object instead.

While still pressing the left mouse button, move the mouse and icon (you’re now “dragging” this icon) over the box that opened up when you clicked the “Customize”ย  button

When you have the mouse and your dragged icon in the middle of the other icons in the middle of that box, release the left mouse button. The “Screenshots” icon should now be in that box and NOT on the top of the Firefox window where it was.

Click on the green button that says “Exit Customize” at the bottom of the box, and you’re done! ๐Ÿ™‚

@Bob99:ย  WOW!ย ย  That’s a whole lot of work compared with the “other” method.ย ย  I don’t have time to try either method presently, however the FF method (from their Mozilla website) is much more simple.ย ย ย ย  I’m definitely NOT computer literate, and that is a “given fact”.ย ย  Thank youย  for providing the method you utilized to get rid of the “FF Screenshots”!ย ย  It’s interesting that both actions can accomplish getting rid of the FF Screenshots, however one is much more complex than the other.ย  Thank you for taking the time to provide this information, it is most appreciated!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

            • #143961

It’s not really complex, I just broke it down to simplify it and remove any doubt that may arise, and to anticipate potential questions that may arise during the procedure. It’s actually only four steps:

              Click the menu icon.

Click the “Customize” button. That will open the “Customize” box.

Left click on and drag the “Screenshots” icon into the middle of the Customize box from the top of the Firefox screen. Release the left click when you’re done dragging the icon.

Click on the “Exit Customize” button at the bottom of the Customize box, and you’re done. ๐Ÿ™‚

@Bob99:ย  It may be “simple” for you, however with my “track record”, I’m afraid to move sometimes for fear I will make an error, or mess something up.ย ย  Your condensed version of the steps you took make it “appear” much easier than the first version.ย ย  Thank you for that!ย ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

              You’re very welcome! ๐Ÿ™‚

            • #143972

If you do decide to use the about:config page to disable the Screenshots “feature”, please bear in mind the following warning that appears before Firefox will let you into the about:config page (this is a direct quote from my copy of Firefox):

“Changing these advanced settings can be harmful to the stability, security, and performance of this application. You should only continue if you are sure of what you are doing.”

I added the bold and italic emphasis. Although the folks at Firefox/Mozilla (the makers of Firefox) make “light” of this statement on their page about how to disable Screenshots, it is worth considering very seriously by everyone. If one mistakenly modifies the wrong setting, one can easily render their copy of Firefox virtually useless in the worst case.

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I have read the documents several times, so hopefully I’ve gained some information about the “System Restore”ย ย  Windows “Backup” was never set up on this computer.ย  That is one reason I was trying to find out if this computer even had one, and of course it doesn’t.ย ย ย  I’m not knowledgeable at all about how this function “works”, so I may be a little “slow” about understanding.

I did notice on the one websiteย  “How To Use The System Restore”. etc. the following:

In Step 6ย  it says “Note:ย  Windows will shut down to complete the System Restoreย  etc..

I don’t see anywhere about rebooting, although that must be done – – – ย  correct?ย  Also the following is written a little “differently”, however I think it “means”:

Step 7.ย ย  “Once started, System Restore cannot be interrupted.ย  Do you want to continue?ย  Click Yes in the dialog box.

          ************************************************

There is a reference in the “Note” about the computer rebooting, and then moving on to Step 9.ย ย  I hope I’m getting this straight.ย  It is all completely “new” to me, so I would like to be certain that I will be following everything exactly the way it should be.

Thank you for calling my attention to the fact that I did not have the correct information in the screenshot I sent.ย ย  I think I understand what the System Restore is, however can’t do anything without having the necessities set up as they should be.ย  Also I have no clue as to what starting Windows in “Safe Mode” is, other than it’s an option sometimes after booting up.ย  I wish so much that I would have had the opportunity to study computers because I feel as if I “know nothing“.

I’m continuing to read the directions as much as possible so I know what to do first, and do it correctly.ย ย  Thank you for the links you sent to these excellent references.ย ย  I don’t know when I can get started (or exactly where to begin), however it will no doubt be in the morning.ย  I hope I don’t get “stuck” on something after I’ve started the process.ย ย ย ย  The “extra hour” should help everyone feel more “rested”.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

System Restore and System Backup are two different things.

The instructions that you referenced are for restoring to an already created System Restore point. System Restore points are created automatically in some situations, and can also be created manually. What I suggest you do is manually create a System Restore point. Someday, if your computer is not working well, you can use the instructions you referenced to restore to a System Restore point that was created when your computer was functioning better.

Mr.Brian:ย ย  Thank you for the advice you provided about the “start up menu”.ย ย  I did move the cursor to “Start in Normal Mode”.ย ย ย  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now I must get back to the “Setting up the restore point”.ย ย ย  I was “only” looking at the menu when I asked the questions and submitted the screenshots.ย  NOW WHEN I GO TO THE ACTUAL PRINT OUT OF THE Geek Document, I find that I can’t correlate the instructions with my computer.

I clicked on the Start Menu, typed restore, and there was NOTHING referenced for “Create a Restore Point”, other than the screenshots I had made and sent to you.ย ย  Therefore I think it would be “best” if I totally “deleted those screen shots” holding down the “shift” key at the same time.ย ย

I know nothing about these things, however when the “search is done through the “Start Menu it is not bringing up “Create a Restore Point”.ย  It IS showing ONLY the screenshots, however, so I think totally deleting them holding down the”shift key” will get rid of those.

I don’t know the reason my “menu” is different from the one shown in the “Geek Document”.ย ย ย  Also in my Control Panel, there is a separate “icon” showing:

“Backup & Restore” which does not have any option for setting up a Restore Function.ย  This computer is s Win7 x64, Home Prem.ย ย  It is not like the graphics in the Geek document.ย  Is there any possibility that I “can’t” set up a Restore Function on this computer?ย ย  Screenshot attached of my Control Panel information .

I think to be safe, I should TOTALLY DELETE THE SCREENSHOTS I HAVE ON THE DESKTOP, HOLDING DOWN THE SHIFT KEY….. However I just don’t know what to do.ย  I must be away for about 40 minutes, and hope that you will have a reply for this “crazy situation”.ย ย ย ย ย ย  Thank you for “any reply” that will make me aware of the reasons I can’t duplicate the instructions on the Geek document, and also IF I should TOTALLY DELETE THE SCREENSHOTS ON THE DESKTOP?ย ย ย  Thank you for anything you can do to help me.ย ย  I just don’t know what to do.ย ย ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™

@Mr,Brian:ย ย  I found a link which seems to have theย  information relevant to turning the IE “off”.ย ย  Here is the link:

              https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/947324

              Here is what it says:

“I don’t need Internet Explorer now I have Firefox, so what do I do with it? do I keep them both runningย ?”

              <h3>Chosen solution</h3>
You don’t need to remove Internet Explorer, but if you find it bothersome, you can do either of the following.

              1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
              2. Choose Add or Remove Programs.
              3. In the new window that opens, click Add/Remove Windows Components on the left side.
              4. Uncheck “Internet Explorer”.

(the next one applies to XP I think)

              ******************************************

Do you think that this would help me to get out of this predicament?ย ย  I’m so dense, I just don’t know what occurred and I feel so badly having a problem such as this come up now.ย  I can’t even recall the last time I (knowingly) used the IE.

Mr.Brian:ย ย  Now I have another VERY serious problem.ย ย  I don’t know when this occurred because I’ve been under so much stress and anxiety the past several months, however this has to have been “recently”.

I actually (apparently) OPENED THE INTERNET EXPLORER, AND IT’S ON THE “task bar on the bottom” of the screen.ย ย  There is an “option” toย  unpin that icon from the task bar. Would that protect meย  so that I NEVER open it again, or have I already damaged my computer by having it open.ย ย  I don’t know how this happened.

OMG!!!!ย  It has some of the links listed that I use for searching (Google).ย  I’ve deleted the few that were listed except for one.ย  What concerns me is “how did it get open”, because it had the “log-in for a Google” which I’ve never used, and it also has the Yahoo Log-in page as well.ย  I deleted the Google log-in because I’ve never used that and all of the Google search references that showed under “frequent”. ย  However if I remove this IE shortcut icon from the task bar, am I “doomed”???? How do I ensure that it is never opened again? ย  It has an option to ” open last session”, and also “open new tab” (“and start in private browsing”).

How I discovered it was that I had a graphic that I just couldn’t change the size of, and when I clicked on the graphic it showed Internet Explorer.ย ย ย  I hope you see this message tonight.ย  I am SO afraid of the IE, and I don’t know how it even got on the task bar.ย ย  It may have been there and I just didn’t notice it.ย ย  I hope I can sleep tonight.ย ย  I am so anxious.ย  I know I should have stopped looking, however the “answer” finally came to me when I saw the IE reference showing up on this graphic that I couldn’t show in its original size.

Now I’m wondering if when I tried to get rid of the FF screenshot thing, that could have done it.ย  I just don’t know.ย ย ย  I hate to bother you again with a “new” problem,ย  however I am hoping that “if” I can unpin it from the task bar, that this will never happen again (if it’s not too late.ย  How do I know when it IS open???

I hope that I haven’t done any damage to the computer.ย ย  I’m up to date on all of the updates and I did set up the “new restore point” successfully yesterday.ย ย ย  I hope that you can please, please help me out of this horrible dilemma that I got myself into now.ย ย ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™ย  ๐Ÿ™

Mr.Brian:ย ย ย  I didn’t hit the correct message I was trying to reply to, and it has new information which may be of help with the present nightmare.ย ย  I apologize for not getting that reply to the correct message, and hope that you will see it.ย ย  I must log off, as I’m beginning to feel badly.ย  I hope and pray you can help me.ย ย  I thank you so much for the many, many times you have miraculously helped me.ย ย ย ย  Thank you once again.ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

            • #144795

Mr.Brian:ย  I now note that there is a BIG IE Icon on the desktop.ย ย  This is a BIG ICON and when I R. Click on it, it has the word “OPEN” on it, and it immediately takes over, so I know it must cause this thing to “OPEN”.ย ย  It’s just like the task bar icon, except that it has a lot more options, etc.

I was going to try to look at this once more, and that is when I noted that there was NOW this LARGE ICON on the desk top, that I dare not even R. Click on apparently.ย ย  I think now that when I had the “warning” about do you want to “repair your computer” or “startย  normally” I should have probably selected the “repair your computer”.

Now the minute I’m turning on the computer the IE has already taken over, so I’ve been doing a “reboot” and then when it comes up if I stay away from either of those icons, I can use the FF and it seems to be okay.ย ย  I know I have to get to bed, I thought by some miracle you might have a few moments to check for any messages.ย ย  I will leave the computer on for a while and hope that you see the messages I’ve been sending.ย ย ย  Apologies for this crazy situation – – – – I just keep digging myself in deeper.ย  However I will check this website once more to see if you may have found these messages.ย ย ย  This is the “latest” in the “series of the nightmare IE events” as of this time.ย ย ย  I just hope I can get some sleep when I finally fall into bed.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™ย  ๐Ÿ™

Perhaps the reason you were unknowingly sometimes using Internet Explorer is because Internet Explorer is the default program for opening some types of files, as you gave an example of. You can unpin it from the taskbar if you wish. I’m not sure if I would disable Internet Explorer though.

        @MrBrian

If he inadvertently set IE as the default (sometimes it asks you to set it as default when it opens), perhaps he should check to see that FF is his default browser. B/c if IE is the default, it will open even if the icon is not on the taskbar and/or desktop.

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I have no idea of how the small icon on the desk top “activated” the IE.ย  I haven’t used it in literally “years”, and now there is a BIG ICON on the desk top that suddenly appeared.ย  Since I set up the System Restore point, couldn’t I go back to there when the IE “did not appear” to be active?ย ย  I am desperate, and needย  help badly.ย ย  I don’t know if I can find anyone around here that knows anything about computers, so I am very, very upset because I don’t know what to do, and I do not want to disable the IE.

I had very little sleep last night, which is one reason I am later than usual checking the messages.

Is there no help for me at all?ย ย  If the Restore Point we set up won’t help, is there any other action I can take to get this IE not to activate?ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™ย ย  ๐Ÿ™

    • #144835

@PKCano:ย  The Firefox browser shows that it (FF) as being the default browser.ย ย  I think there is an option in the Control Panel to check on “default settings” too, however I don’t know enough about it to feel comfortable changing anything, and as I mentioned if we setup a “Restore Point” prior to this occurring couldn’t I go back to that (I haven’t learnedย  how to do that yet) and see if something can be done to stop the IE?

There is a “red flag” on the MS desktop icon task bar, which has the following messages (I think yesterday there were only 2 messages, however I just glanced at it).ย ย  Here are the messages in the sequence listed:

****”Change Windows Update Settings” (Important).ย  I think this is the one that everyone gets who has “NEVER CHECK” as the option.****

*****Windows Definition needs to scan your computer.***** (which I’ve seen before too).

      ****** (MS Icon Shield) ย ย  ย ย  Set up backup******ย ย  I have never seen this one before.

      ************************************************************************

There was only one update which came up after we did the “System Restore”, and that was the WD update.ย ย  I did not want to do anything else until I learned how to “go back to a Restore Point”

Thank you so much for your advice.ย ย  If you or Mr.Brian could provide a little more information perhaps I could get things back to where they were before I set the Restore Point (?).ย ย  Your advice is always very much appreciated, and I have searched high and low for information on this subject, however there is a paucity of information out there, and some users have had the same problems with the IE. ย ย  I am very desperate at this point in time as the weekend is coming up, and I don’t know of anyplace that does this type of work (or if they are “reliable”).ย ย ย  All I can do is hope and pray that someone can help me.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™ย  ๐Ÿ™

@Mr.Brian & @PKCano:ย ย ย  I don’t know how to address this message, however you have both replied to my messages.

I did a computer scan with my “Security Program” yesterday and it came up clean.

I noted that in the Control Panel, there is an Option for “Default Programs“, however I do not know enough about this to attempt to change anything.ย ย  This function is also listed “separately” in another list. Is there any possibility that this option may provide the change(s) needed to get the IE to stop interfering with the computer functions?).ย ย  I AM LITERALLY VERY, VERY DESPERATE.ย ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™ย  ๐Ÿ™

@Mr.Brian & @PKCano:ย  I have been attempting to get into this Topic Website for hours, and was never successful until now.ย ย ย  I wanted to send a screenshot of the CPU usage as I’ve seen others send information such as this and it was helpful.ย  There must be some method of controlling the IE.ย ย  I don’t want to lose it, just keep it from causing problems.ย ย  Is there no one who has the knowledge and experience to be able to provide some guidance to a way out of this dilemma?ย ย  It is soon going to be too late for me to even begin to try to find anyone to help me with a holiday weekend almost upon us.

I can do nothing, because I do not know “what to do”, and strangely there is no individual, apparently, who would have the knowledge and guidance I am searching for.ย  If there is ANYTHING I can do to move to a resolution that you are aware of, PLEASE, PLEASE, help me.ย ย  Any and all help would be sincerely appreciated ย ย  ๐Ÿ™

@Mr.Brian:ย  Before I begin to make any changes, I wanted to comment that the illustrations on the website link are not “identical” to those I have on my MS Windows 7 x64 Home Premium.ย ย  I hope that I won’t getย  “get stuck” on something that I’m not certain about.ย ย  Is here any chance of that occurring?

Or should I just “take a chance” and “guess”?.ย  I note that on one of the illustrations it has “Check for solutions to problem reports” and it is “ON”.ย ย  The other items on that page are “currently not monitored”.ย ย ย  I don’t know anything about this “”solutions to problem reports”.

The next illustration is to turn messages on or off.ย  I know theย  Windows Update should be off, however there is one for “Internet Security settings”, and it probably should be turned off as well ????? since I don’t see it on my taskbar Action Center (?).ย ย  Also there is one Windows Backup which I am supposed to turn off.

If there are no other items which I must change, can I thenย  “close” this “Action Center” somehow??ย ย  I just don’t want to get “stuck” on something “wrong”, and if I have no more changes to be made is it “safe” to then turn it off, SOMEHOW??

Dumb questions, I know, however this is all very new to me, and I don’t want to mess it up.ย  Hope you will be back later and then I will know for certain, how to turn it off after I’ve made the changes.ย  I apologize for being the “dunce of the class”, however I do want to “do it right and not make any mistakes.ย ย  Thank you very much for your guidance with this.ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr.Brian:ย ย ย  I only made 2 moves, and that took everything out of the Action Center except for the reminder that Windows Defender needed to update.ย ย  It appears that this was the objective we were aiming for, so it’s okay now if I just allow the WD to do its update, or should I try to set up a “restore point” before I allow the WD to perform itsย  scan.ย ย  Or should I “do a “Restore Point” and then do the normal “check for updates” ย  (with the NEVER CHECK FOR UPDATES ON AS ALWAYS).ย ย ย ย  I’m not too clear about the “Restore Point” thing, however I’ve seen a few “problems with the MSRT and the WD too – – – granted “far and few in between.

It appears to me that those items we did not want in the Action Center are no longer there! WONDERFUL WORK once again, Mr.Brian.ย ย ย  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

@Mr.Brian:ย  I think I had asked about the unchecked 4 updates which have been in the “Optionals” for quite a while, however just in case I haven’t I will list 2 of them here.ย ย  I know “nothing about these however will annotate what little I have a clue on.

1.ย  Preview of Quality Rollup for .NET Frameworkย  (KB4942076) issued 10/17/17,ย  40.2 MB.

2.ย  Brother Printer:ย  Released 2/28/2014,ย  12:00 a.m. – – 1.15.0.0, Published 2/15/2017.ย  15.3 MB , Another user of this computer purchased and installed a Brother printer about 2 (or more) months ago.ย ย ย  When I use the printer, it usually comes up with a promptย ย  “Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?ย ย  (there is a yes or no to click on – – – I click on “no”).

Next line says Program Name:ย  Brother USB Tool, exe

              Publisher:ย ย  Unknown

File Origin:ย  Hard drive on this computer.

Last line on bottom states:ย  “Change when these notifications appear”.

              ******************************

There are two other updates, however these two appear to be the most questionable.ย  If you could provide information on these first two that would help considerably.ย ย  I don’t want to inundate you with “questionable” updates.

BTW, I did not get that KB2952664 in these updates.ย  Wondering if I should verify that it is in the hidden updates.ย ย ย  It is not in the installed updates insofar as I could determine.

You’re welcome, and thank you for the kind words :).

You could use a recent topic from https://www.askwoody.com/forums/view/topics-freshness/ or you could start your own topic(s).

@Mr.Brian:ย  I apologize for taking so long to reply, however it took me “forever” to get into this Topic.ย  Between the time wasted just trying to log in, and then trying to get to this link took at least 15-20 minutes.

You are most welcome for the “kind words”, Mr.Brian.ย ย  They are well deserved!

I’m not certain how to “start” a Topic, however if I were to be able to have that capability, I would most likely Title it as :

“Questions about unknown “updates For Windows 7” and have them segregated by OS, and this wouldย  cover a lot of “territory” and be much, much easier for the users to be looking at only their operating system instead of others which only add to the disjointed responses from each user.ย  One may be addressing something in Win 10 and the next person is addressing something for another OS.

Just an idea, however I know that it would be much easier for me to just have a “Windows 7 Updates” Topic and follow it along, rather than have each user address his/her system(s) in with everyone else’s.ย ย  For me, it’s a “jungle” out there, and I see many subjects which I have no knowledge about at all, so I just don’t try to understand them.

It there would be a method to separate each OS Updates, (also the users should mention Group A or Group B).ย ย  I think it would be much simpler if it were done in that manner.ย  There are too many “computer illiterates” who just “get lost” trying to determine what an IT person is referring to.ย ย  I think separating the “computer challenged” from those who are very familiar with the various (numerous) acronyms would be a step in the right direction.ย  These are only my views, however I definitely have problems when an acronym pops up and I have no clue as to what is being referred to.ย ย  I just have to ignore the “subject” because I don’t understand the jargon.

Sooooooooo, this is just “my opinion”, and I know it would be much easier for me if “topics” were structured in a more simplistic manner.ย  If I could set up a “Topic” it would just be for “Windows Updates For Windows 7 ”ย  (which would include ALL updates, including “unknown” updates).ย  It would also require that each person submitting a question state the “name” of their Windows 7ย  (x64), Home Premium, etc, as well as the Group they are in.

That’s a lot of “opinion” and, as I mentioned, It is only MY viewpoint, and I’m sure there are others who would have some different, and good ideas as well.

Thank you once again for all of the help you provide to everyone who uses this Website!

Mr.Brian:ย ย  I have just about given up trying to get a reply sent back.ย ย  I’ve been working on it for “ages”.ย ย ย  Thank you for the new link you sent.ย ย  I will try to get there by using it, and hope that I haven’t been logged out once again.ย ย ย  I can’tย  believe how crazy this is!!

I will try to use that link once I send you this reply.ย ย  If I log out before I send the reply it will probably “log me out” again.ย ย  Thank you for that link.ย  I’m going to put it in my email so I’ll have it and can access it from there.ย  I’m sure I’ve attempted to access this site previously, and could never get in, however ifย  keep the link I can keep trying and hoping that it will begin toย  function as it is supposed to.ย ย  Do you recommend that I subscribe to this Topic?ย  I haven’t had to subscribe to any in the past, however it’s becoming impossible to get logged in, and “stay logged in”.

Thank you once again for your help, and Patience!!!ย  Very much appreciated!ย  ๐Ÿ™‚ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t subscribe to any topics. I set my AskWoody browser bookmark to https://www.askwoody.com/forums/view/topics-freshness/ and use it to see topics with recent posts.

@Mr.Brian:ย ย  I did go to that first link, and I did subscribe.ย ย  It seems to be about the only way I can get anything, and even then it was an arduous task.ย ย  I have no clue as to what is wrong with the entire website now.ย ย  I will keep the new bookmark you have just furnished, and then go back and attempt to unsubscribe (as I’ve seen where some users have had a problem unsubscribing).ย ย  Thank you for this new link.ย ย  The other one, after I subscribed, seems to move faster, and I wasn’t logged out, so that’s an improvement.ย  Thank you once again for your invaluable help.ย ย  You have not lost your “Golden Touch”!!!ย ย ย  ๐Ÿ™‚ย  ๐Ÿ™‚
