Error in Kernel32.dll (2000)

Sometimes while working w/ Word get message: “Winword has caused an error in Kernel32.dll. Winword will now close.” Cliscking on “Close” doesn’t always close it either. Cannot discern any pattern; it just simply happens.

I could find nothing on the Knowledge Base that addresses this message directly. Doing a search here produced 150 results on error messges with kernel32.dll. I did not have time to search them, but maybe one of them will give you a clue.

Tracking down the cause of these error messages tend to be quite elusive. Some things that you can do for the general health of your system are to clean out temp files, reboot when resources get low, do a scandisk & defrag.

I’m not familiar with Windows ME. If you don’t get a resolution here, you might post on the Win ME board.

PHIL — Thank you again. I will check out that “here” link later. As to maintenance suggestions you made, yes, I do all those roughly every 7 to 10 days. Besides just TMP files, there’s lot of other junk for the dumpster incl. SHS, GID, BAK, WBK, CHK files. It’s amazing how much garbage Winows saves with nary a clue to users. When I’ve checked other people’s computers, have sometimes found THOUSANDS of these clogging hard drive. We dump ’em all, then Defrag.

One other thing to check: get hold of the the most up to date virus definitions, and then scan your hard drive. There was a virus going around several months ago (can’t recall which one) which substituted its own version of this core .dll.
This happened on my home PC and my virus software was able to detect it and remove it.
Just another thing to check out…..
