when I do the above & click ok, a blank file opens, & then I open whatever file I want from the file/open menu. When I close this new file, I get the error message

One possibility is that you have some temp files or even a second normal.dot.

      1. Click the taskbar & press F3.
      2. Make sure your primary hard drive & inlcude subfolders is checked.
      3. Type in normal.dot & see if you have more than one. If so, keep the one in the template folder & rename the other.
      4. Search for *.tmp,~*.w?? & delete all these temp files (with Word closed).

I’d also look in the startup folder to see if an add-in or other template is making modifications to normal.dot. Also, check your hard drive with an up to date virus checker.

If you’re getting a message when double-clicking a file, a similar message appears if the file associations are incorrect. For this you would open Windows Explorer/View/Options/File Types & scroll to Microsoft Word Document.

Select it & select Open in the dialog box. Then click Edit.

For application used to perform action, it should be

      "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficewinword.exe" /n

      Use DDE should be checked.
      DDE Message should be:
      [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen(“%1”)]

      Application: Winword
      Topic: System

Hope this helps. Let us know what worked.

        > 1. Click the taskbar & press F3.

This is worthy of a post in Win95!

        Thanks!!!
