When I shut down windows XPon my HP laptop, an error message flashes on the screen. I can only get the words “failed to initialize” before it disappears. is there a way to pause during the shut down process?
When I boot up, a balloon appears above the tray “Your computer may be at risk because Norton is not active”. I check Norton and indeed it IS active and working. Any suggestions for either situation? Thanks for your help. LL

A quick search of Symantec Support showed one possible cause – Message: “ccApp.exe is not responding” during computer restart or shut down

It is a frequently encountered Norton problem, and I think you’ll find a few possible reasons/suggestions from these searches!

Situation:
When shutting down your computer without a floppy disk in the floppy drive, your computer may attempt to access your floppy drive for a few seconds before continuing with the shutdown process.Solution:
Norton AntiVirus is checking your floppy drive to determine if a disk is inserted so that it can be scan for malicious code.To disable this function of Norton AntiVirus, follow these steps
1. Launch Norton AntiVirus (click Start>Programs>Norton AntiVirus> Norton AntiVirus 2003 or Norton AntiVirus 2004).
2. Click Options.
3. Under the System heading, click Auto-Protect.
4. Select the Advanced option and uncheck “Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down.”
5. Click OK.The next time that you shut down your PC, the prolonged disk access should not happen.
This one also dates from 2003, but there was some form of change about four days ago! (I think this is the one that Tony pointed to…).

Situation:
When you restart or shut down your computer, you see the Windows dialog box displaying the message “ccApp.exe is not responding. . . .” Sometimes, Windows closes the program and you can restart or shut down. At other times you must click End Now to close ccApp.exe.Solution:
This problem was fixed for some Norton programs in the latest Common Client and Norton AntiSpam program updates. To install the update, start your Norton product, run LiveUpdate, download the updates, including any Common Client updates and the Norton AntiSpam program update if it is listed, and then restart the computer when prompted. For more details on how to run LiveUpdate, see the document How to run LiveUpdate.This message can also occur when ccApp.exe, the main Norton host file, is closing the Norton product services and the computer is shut down before ccApp.exe has finished. If you have the latest program updates and you still get this message, wait a minute or two for Windows to close. If Windows does not close the application in that time, then click End Now and allow the shutdown process to continue.

With regard to the second question you have, receiving the tool-tip alleging that your computer is at risk because Norton is not active, I suspect that this is purely a matter of timing. Norton Antivirus is a lumbering beast, and it may be that the new-in-SP2 Windows Security Centre doesn’t give it enough time to start up before sounding the warning. See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 883792. If you’re sure that Norton always starts up, I would say that you have an ignorable!

Since the ccapp is also a Norton program, I don’t think I will worry about that either. When I get the screen that ccapp is shutting down, I clicked on “end now” and had no problems. This site and you in particular are a wonderful source of help!!!!

You may not believe this, but as I was logging off my userid last night I got a window saying that ccapp had not closed, and did I want to End Now or wait for it to be terminated?
Coincidence, or X-files, or what?!
