• Error on shutdown

    For the last couple of weeks I have noticed two identical error messages pop up just as the computer shuts down. I took a video of the errors and have attached images. The first error comes up for about a half second then the second one on top of it for just a fraction before shutdown.  I have tried looking through the event viewer at the time the errors occurred but I’m not knowledgeable to make sense of what I’m looking at. The errors don’t seem to harm anything since they occur just as the computer shuts down. I’m using the latest version of Win 10 64 bit with all current updates. Is there some way I can track down what is causing this? Thanks.

      Look in Reliability Monitor for errors (red x)

        So every day since May 20 there is a red X with the time I started the system saying “Windows was not properly shut down”. Under technical details it says “The previous system shutdown at 8:00:29 PM on ‎6/‎18/‎2023 was unexpected.” No other details.

      Start with Alex’s suggestion above, and see if you do have any errors in the reliability monitor. That can yield some information with regards to just which file(s) or program(s) is/are causing the problem.

      If the problem is within Windows, then it is time for you to run (from a command prompt with administrator privileges) the following: chkdsk /f. Run it on the drive that contains your Windows installation. You’ll be told that it needs to reboot the computer in order to do what it needs to so, so go ahead and reboot the computer by selecting the option labeled “Restart” from the start menu’s power options. The command will actually run immediately after the computer begins its boot process and, once chkdsk is finished will then proceed to let Windows finish booting up.

      Once you’ve run the chkdsk command, now run the command “sfc /scannow” (without the quotes, of course) again from a command prompt with administrator privileges. If you have Windows installed on a HDD instead of an SSD, it may take a while, so please be patient.

      Let us know what you find.

        Ran both as suggested. The logs are attached. I’m not seeing anything in there that stands out but as I said I’m not knowledgeable enough to know for sure.

          Getting a “Forbidden” error from AskWoody when I try to view your chkdsk log. Can you change the file type to .txt and try to re-upload it?

          Nothing out of the ordinary in the sfc log at all…it found and fixed a bad link to a file.

          By the way, please see @geekdom ‘s post below for another suggestion.

      Try this procedure:

      • Open an administrative command prompt (CMD)
      • Type: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
      • Reboot
      On permanent hiatus {with backup and coffee}

      You are getting “Forbidden” from your browser.

        Yes, but what do you get?

        I get, “Couldn’t download — No permissions” on Edge.
