Excel 2002 (Trendline – Line & Symbol in Legend)

Hi,
A colleague of mine has a graph that has a symbol that plots the data points in a graph… this symbol appears in the legend. Then she created a trendline off of the same data points, which created a straight-dotted line… we can not figure a way to get this straight-dotted line to ALSO appear in the legend along with the symbol. We want the symbol AND the line to show up in the legend so that readers of the graph understand which trendline belongs with which data point symbol. Different colors are NOT an option with this graph as it will ultimately be published in black & white. Any help is always appreciated!!

As far as I know that is not possible.

As an alternative, you could calculate the values for the trend line using the TREND function, then add the trend line as a new series. You can format the series just like you can format any other series. But, as a consequence, the trend line itself will also have markers for the data points.

Another option is to add a Dummy range (I used an NA so it would not plot) and format it with the label and line combo desired. Then you can remove the legends fo the actual series and and the trendline:

select each individually in the legend (both the marker and name should be selected)
