Is there a way to programically search out external references to other workbooks? I’ve searched all cells that I thought something my be there (A1 to Z256) formula’s for external links yet found none. Though going into Edit, Links, it tells me that there is still something linking to an external workbook. This problem is started by copying a worksheet from one workbook to another.

Q138619 in the MS Knowledge Base may help you.

You could try searching each worksheet for xls (or xl?) which might find reference to any other workbook.

Failing that try these previous threads that dealt with the issue :

      or Removing links

In particular, look at eiteher of the two following “remove external links” routines:
        Bill Manville’s utility

        and Microsoft’s version

They both work OK, and can help to find references where you might not expect to look (hidden named ranges for instance).

There is a circumstance where neither works in removing the link, but you can at least find the link.

Examine your ‘copied’ sheet for named ranges which have references to external sources. Also, charts, buttons, and other objects may have external links as well.

Yep, that was the first thing I tried, programmically examined every cell from A1 to Z256, didn’t need to yet, had to try.
