• Excel and Documentum (2002)

In order to better control the huge amount of files generated within our Group the Company has required all files to be stored using the Software Documentum.

The major drawback when using Excel is that every time you open a workbook stored in Documentum it creates a new Excel Session. In other words, if you have 2 workbooks opened you will have a window running Excel with workbook A and another window running Excel with workbook B

The real frustration is that under the above model there appears to be no easy way to do simple items such as copy a worksheet from one workbook to another or to create lilnks.

To see this problem merely open up Excel then open a workbook, now open Excel again and open a different workbook. Now try to see if you can some how copy one of the worksheets from workbook A to workbook B.

To be very clear the only role Documentum is playing is the creation of the multiple sessions. From there I would believe that some type of “Windows” or Excel work around is needed. Or as I suspect there is no solution.

Any assistance or ideas are most appreciated

I don’t know how many hooks Documentum has into Excel so the following may not work if it controls opening and closing.

Allow it to open both sessions, then save the second to a temporary work file and open it from the first – painful I know.
If that works, the process could be automated via VBA from instance 1

Thanks for that suggestion, I was thinking along that line. Using instance 1 in VBA could be helpful.
