I don’t use Excel very much, but last night when I launched it, I got an error message (attached). I seem to recall some time ago something similar happened to me with Word, but I cannot find that post (is the Search function currently disabled?) Whatever it was, I was able to fix it based on someone’s response. Anyone here know the reason for this error message and what I have to do to fix it?

      1. Start Excel. Choose Tools, add-ins.
      2. Write down all that are checked
      3. uncheck them all
      4. Check one add-in
      5. restart Excel
      6. If the problem is still there, you found the offending one
      7. If no error, repeat from step 4

My guess would be that it is an add-in whose file is called pdfwrite.xla, installed by Acrobat reader.

That PDFWriter.xla rings a bell. I am fairly sure that was what was causing the problem in Word. However, in Excel, when I go to Tools>Addins, it is not listed there. What next? PS I also get a slightly different error when I exit Excel (attached). In both cases, clicking OK helps.

See OFF: “Compile Error in Hidden Module” Error Message When You Start Word or Excel for possible causes and workarounds.

If you have Norton Anti Virus, and have the Office Plugin enabled, I recommend disabling it. It is not necessary.

No NAV, but I did have the pdfmaker.xla file in the Excel startup. I have now moved it to My Documents (as the MSKB suggested) and Excel now opens and closes without any error message. But what I am supposed to do with that file? Can I just delete it? What does it do? Thanks for the link.

PDFMaker.xla is an Excel add-in that can be used to convert Excel spreadsheets to PDF files. Apparently some versions of this add-in can cause problems, and as the MSKB article says, a newer version should be available from Adobe.
For the moment, I wouldn’t throw away the .xla, just leave it in a place where it doesn’t do harm. If you get a new and improved version from Adobe, you can delete the old one.

I should have mentioned xlstart as a possible location. Sorry.

Just delete pdfwrite.xla. If you never write Excel stuff to acrobat document format, you won’t be needing it.

I actually make quite a lot of PDFs but never use the Writer as I have Distiller, which does a much better job. Thank you for your replies. Problem solved.

I just recently had this problem in Excel 2000. While the MSKB said it could only apply if you also had Norton Anti-Virus installed, that’s not true. We use McAfee and I still had the problem. I have the Distiller so I simply deleted the add in.
