Excel file bloated (XP or lower)

Someone sent me a 4-sheet workbook which is about 400k. The information is quite small, not 400 k probably. When I go Control +End , it takes me to row 1419 column AU – on a sheet that is only 150 rows, columns A-J of actual data. The other sheets are similar. I suspect these phantom rows and columns are bloating the file. Do you think so? If so, how can I make these phantoms go away?

Go to the row after the last row of data and click on the row number to select the row. Now scroll down to the row that Excel goes to when you do Ctr/End, hold down Shift and click on the row number of that row to select all of the rows between the last row of data and the row Excel thinks is the last row. Select Delete from the Edit menu to delete all of those rows. Save the file, close Excel, and reopen the file. Do a Ctrl/End to see where it goes now. Check the new file size. You might also need to do the same thing with any extra columns.

Additionally, if this workbook contains (or did contain) VBA modules, it might have leftovers of the developing stages. Download the CodeCleaner utility at http://www.bmsltd.ie/MVP/Default.htm%5B/url%5D to get rid of it.
