How to link graphs without changing formatting?
I have excel graphs I want to link to a powerpoint presentation and graphs in powerpoint where I want to link the data back to excel. In each case, the formatting is changing in the link.
    1. When I try to change or resize the powerpoint slide after the link, the excel graph gets distorted.
    2. The powerpoint slide formats are setup by a department and you cannot change them. When you link the data tables, they change. For example, the Y axis is set up with a month and number of incidents (eg, Oct 2). Even when I format this is in excel as a text field, powerpoint still reads it as a date. The format doesn’t even stay consistent. One column heading reads as 02-Oct and the next reads Nov 08. I want to link the data and not change the powerpoint format.

I am not sure what the problem is: This might be more of a powerpoint issue

If I link an excel chart in powerpoint the relative dimensions stay as they are set in excel unless I resize in powerpoint. If you resize in powerpoint make sure you resize using the “corners” not the sides/tops or you will change the relative dimensions.

I don’t see how powerpoint is changing you text to dates. Format in excel to “general”, if they are numbers they are probably dates and NOT text as you think.

Are you linking charts or linking data or both? The data tables I link look like the excel formatting.

I have attached my powerpoint and excel files so you can view the problems.

I will have to send you the two files separately.

        Thank you.

As I mentioned earlier, I think these are POWERPOINT problems not EXCEL. You might get better response from the powerpoint postings.

          Some comments:
          1) I do NOT understand why powerpoint insists the values are dates, but you are correct ppt is reading/converting to dates, it must be a feature. 1 possible workaround is instead of Oct 34 use Oct (34)
          [=CONCATENATE(A23,” (“,B23,”)”)] or [=a23&” (“&b23&”)”]
This seems to plot ok, though I don’t know if you will be happy with the parentheses

          2) Font changes. Not sure what the issue is exactly in ppt, most font changes are reflected. If I change the color, to wingdings in the original, the linked one changes. I did notice that if you increase your font size on the excel chart, it changes to arial in powerpoint! Must be another feature!

I agree with Steve, when graphing excel data in PPT. I prefer to LINK the data. Just Paste/Link the data into the datasheet that accompanies a chart slide.
You can also create a linked chart from Powerpoint to Excel, in this case use the Insert/Object menu and choose to create from the existing PPT file. Make sure you check the link to file box.
For charts to update, the source files must be saved, whether the source is Excel or PPT.

      Cheers
