I have a user that is experiencing Excel hanging when browsing through a local folder structure. The folder will list out the contents of the folders eventually (maybe about 4/5 mins), but in the meantime, the task manager reports that Excel is not responding.
I have tried using the /s and /regserver startup switches – the /s makes no difference at all, but the /regserver allows me to browse through folders really quickly. However this only happens the first time that Excel is opened…each subsequent file that is opened then causes the hanging when trying to locate a file in another folder. I have also tried to open straight from Excel.exe – again this works the first time, but for any further workbook opened the problem starts again.
When I have two instances of Excel open there is a significant difference in the amount of memory usage….the first instance (the one that works) reports Memory usage of between 28000 – 35000K while the other instance (the one that doesn’t work) reports a memory usage of 2688k, quite considerable lower…
I have also tried to renaming the .xlb files, the .pip file and have removed the entries in HKCUSoftwaremicrosoftoffice11.0 and HKLMsoftwaremicrosoftoffice 11.0 to no avail…
I know that this is not related to a problem on our network (the problem happens when the users tries to browse his local file structure as well as our local network) and it is not an issue with the Workbook, as other users are able to use the same workbooks without any problems.
Reinstalling would be my next thought, however we do not have the installer available and would just have to do a complete rebuild of the machine, which I am hoping to avoid for obvious reasons…..any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
