My hard drive was dying, So I backed up and did a full restore to a new hard drive on My IBM laptop of all c drive files. Now everytime i load excel. It goes to installer, shows installing excel components microst excel feature. I have removed I think all add ins but still the same message. It shows the product is activated. The machine except for a bigger hard drive is the same. I have restored the registery and hardware settings everything and no change. Dect and repair did not help.
    Any ideas.
Outlook is fine. WOrd starts the installer but then dissapears and runs fine. which is also a pain

That happened to me as well.
My solution was unsatisfactorally long-winded – but I tried everything else first with no joy. bummer
      What I did was
      a) saved my data files elsewhere (I’m superstitious when it comes to trusting software)
      totally uninstalled all of office
      c) remove the office file paths
      d) rebooted (did I say I was superstitious)
      e) searched through the registry for Office keys and blew them away
      f) reloaded office and selected ‘custom’ install
      g) selected everything for load
      h) have had no problems since grin

For what it is worth, Office XP comes with a whole lot of sexy features to enable a network master copy to be downloaded to network users in a corporate environment. Sadly, something triggers it to think this is the case for ‘Home’ installations and it seems to be impossible to avoid having the uninstall and install steps being ‘smart’.

I don’t know if you have multiple users or not – if you do – I found I had to run the install for each user.

        Andrew:
Many thanks, I took your advice since whatever I did made it worse, I uninstalled office, and reinstalled it from the original disc, could not even get it to install off the sp1 disc from MSFT./ Now it seems to work fine. Detect and Repair is worthless once you use any upgraded files, Msft really needs to allow us to have some kind of ini file to keep as a copy of a correct instillation.
ALSO I CANT SEEM TO GET JPG FILES TO IMAGE IN THUMBNAIL VIEW ON WINDOWS EXPLORER NOW, BMP AND TIF DO. Tried going into control panel and using advanced folder options to assign it to photo editor, but no improvement. Any thoughts
        Thanks as always
