Excel starts, shows a normal blank sheet, then immediately pops up the following message, then terminates as soon as I click OK on the message window.

    Runtime Error!
    Programs: C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice10EXCEL.EXE
    abnormal program termination

This is in Windows 7 x64. Other Office XP programs run normally. I’ve been using Excel in this same computer setup for over a year without problem until now. I had installed SP1 a few days ago and thought this might be the problem, but I’ve now used System Restore to revert back to the pre-SP1 setup. Still the same problem. I reinstalled Office XP. Still the same problem. I have lots of memory, lots of disk space, and have no reported disk or RAM errors.

What’s the next step in trying to fix this?

I just had a similar experience with xl2007 and windowsXP.
What fixed the problem was deleting the .xlb file that contains the menubar/toolbars (or ribbon) configuration.
The file is automatically rebuilt when Excel starts, if the file is missing.
There is a separate file for each version of Excel.
The file can be found on my machine at:
      C:Documents and Settingssome nameApplication DataMicrosoftExcel
The actual file name should be “Excel10.xlb.”

Wow! You identified the exact problem, and my Excel is back to normal. Many Thanks! Don’t know yet if installing SP1 played any role in causing the problem. I’m going to wait a while before installing SP1 again (and will save an image before the install).

Jim you rocks, you solved my problem faster than the blink of an eye.

Even on Windows 7 this solution is working fine, my Excel XP refuse to start for the same reason of the first guy… i was desperate

On windows 7 the file is placed on another folder. just for the record, it’s c:usersYournamehereappdataroamingmicrosoftexcel

don’t forget to see hidden files because appdata folder is hidden.

anyway, thank you so much Jim for your 2011 answer, you make my day
